‹ Summary Executions in Iraq •
It isn’t very often that I get excited about advertisements – in fact, it’s never happened! – but if you’ll look at the top of the front page of Antiwar.com, you’ll see what I’m talking about. Because, you see, The American Conservative isn’t just another political magazine, and this isn’t just another ad. We’re building a broad-based anti-interventionist movement, here at Antiwar.com – and The American Conservative is a part of it, and an important one. Because you don’t have to be a leftie to be for correcting our crazed foreign policy – and TAC is the proof of it. Every two weeks, they publish some of the best antiwar material being put out, by such authors as Andrew Bacevich, Leon Hadar, Patrick J. Buchanan, – oh, and myself. I’ve been an associate editor of TAC since the beginning, and I’m proud to say that I had a piece in their very first issue.
The current issue will be of interest to my readers. Check out my take on the proposal for a “league of democracies” over at The American Conservative. Also, in the same issue, you might want to look at Anthony Gregory’s great review of my recently republished book, Reclaiming the American Right: The Lost Legacy of the Conservative Movement. The latter is available to subscribers.
You know, you really ought to subscribe: for the first three months, it won’t cost you a thing. That’s right – you can go here and get a free three-month online subscription to TAC.
As an associate editor, I’m proud to be connected to one of the best political magazines around, an invaluable ally of the anti-interventionist cause. Go check it out today!

How about taking out an ad with my past employer–_Liberty_ magazine?
Seems to me some advertising on the site is a very reasonable idea. There must be just a slew of publishers that would like to put books in front of the people who use Antiwar. T-shirts- why not? Maybe somebody who sells the kind of specialized communications equipment we’re going to need when the internet and phone systems stop working. So I’m all for it: bring on ads.
You just reminded me to get some antiwar.com t-shirts for Xmas presents from the antiwar.com site. If anyone is interested, go to “Shop antiwar” on the left side of the home page. The antiwar shop has other things besides T-shirts.
I’d personally rather not see any ads.
Me neither. Thanks, j. write.
Right on, bro. Not only will ads make Antiwar.com less dependent on readers’ goodwill, but will offer things I might be interested in.
Advertisements for trial magazine subscriptions might come back to haunt you during future fundraisers. If you give people the impression that your site is supported by advertising dollars they wont be as likely to contribute their own money. Please be careful.
I read the mag regularly but they need to change its name.
You know I love you Justin, but Lew is ahead of you on this one.
“What does conservatism today stand for? It stands for war. It stands for power. It stands for spying, jailing without trial, torture, counterfeiting without limit, and lying from morning to night.
There comes a time in the life of every believer in freedom when he must declare, without any hesitation, to have no attachment to the idea of conservatism.”
–Lew Rockwell
Afterall, Buchannan is an avowed Hamiltonian…say no more.
Well said, Lew.
Judging conservatism by the present crop of quarter-wit warmongers makes about as much sense as judging libertarianism by its warmonger flagbearers in Washington. Ya gotta love Lew, but he’s the pot calling the kettle black.
Thank you for putting that ad on top… I was wondering if it was Google’s Adsense or something, but I am glad to see that that advertisement was specifically selected by you guys.
I was one of the charter subscribers of The American Conservative (when the magazine began in 2002, along with the great Buchanan and Press show). It’s too bad that that show is not on the air, and it’s also too bad that I let my subscription to TAC lapse; that needs to be corrected, ASAP! :-)
Personally, I think putting an ad up for TAC is a great idea. I’ve been a subscriber of the magazine for years and I really enjoy it.
Mr.Nelson,
You make Lew’s point; popular “conservatism” is a corrupted ideology that
is in no way conservative.
How is this a hypocrisy?
Lew has never been in league with either the quarter-wits you describe
nor the flag waving libertarians you mention.
Lew Rockwell represents both Liberalism and Conservatism in the true
sense of both words. If this appears to be a confusing contradiction
then you understand neither concept.
Your last paragraph would be true if Lew had qualified the conservatism he attacked. Since he didn’t (therefore making his condemnation of conservatism general), and since he is a member of a persuasion that has partly supported warmongering just as some antiwar conservatives are, he’s inconsistent here.
@Mr.Nelson,
I didn’t notice the inconsistency since I was not aware that
Mr.Rockwell was a member of any persuasion except for his
non-negotiable stance as an anti-war, anti-state, pro-market
champion of liberty and freedom.
When liberals speak of liberalism do you suppose they are
speaking about the classic idea of individual liberty being
above the reach of the state? Or do you suppose they are
speaking of their peculiar worship of the state which includes
war, power, spying, jailing without trial, torture, counterfeiting
without limit, and lying from morning to night?
Likewise, when republicans speak of conservatism do you suppose
they are speaking of preserving our republican way of life? Or
do you surmise that they are speaking about war, power,
spying, jailing without trial, torture, counterfeiting without limit,
and lying from morning to night?
In both cases, if you choose the latter you are correct.
I don’t think the TAC ad is a good idea. I’m a longtime reader and contributor, and I strongly support Antiwar.com’s mission, which, among other things, seeks to bring antiwar news, opinions and information from across the political spectrum. Granted, Antiwar.com has never been shy about its libertarian (and paleoconservative) roots, nor should it be. However, in seeking to serve an audience of all political leanings, Antiwar.com does a potential disservice to left-leaning readers visiting the site for the first time. Being greeted wtih a large, prominent top banner for some publication called “The American Conservative” is not going to help draw a newcomer leftist to read the rest of the site or make return visits, and in fact may prompt them to reflexively click away from the site. I think the TAC ad will cost this site new readers, and will unfortunately give Antiwar.com a first-glance partisan appearance.
