Jeff Huber, RIP

Yesterday, Daily Kos posted the sad news that Jeff Huber died. Huber, a retired Navy commander, loved to skewer the powerful and the pretentious, but he never let outrage diminish his wit. If you have never sampled his inimitable blend of humor and insight, take a moment to enjoy some of the following:

  1. Sad news indeed.

M . Huber also wrote the tragic comedy "Bathtub Admirals" which I highly recommend to anyone who liked Catch 22.

And who will be looking after his dogs now?

  2. Huber was an excellent writer – and gutsy as well. It was a shame that someone of his character and judgment could not have been hired to curb Pentagon antics.

  3. "God help America. We have no strategy. We have no achievable objectives. We have no idea what we’re doing." Jeff Huber RIP

  4. I discovered Jeff Huber's blog, "Pen and Sword," only late last year. In the short time that we exchanged views and commentary, I found him a generous wit and kindred spirit. As a veteran of Uncle Sam's Canoe Club (not to mention America's Children's Crusade in Vietnam), I will miss Jeff's timely and important observations on the Nation of Sheep in the Land that Forgot Time.

  5. I am speechless. Jeff was the best writer on this site. He was unvarnished and true. He made me laugh, and he was always generous with his personal encouragement.

    This is the worst news.

  6. awwhh… terrible news.. His prose was among the best.. Humorous and informative…. Impossible to replace….

  7. Commander Jeff Huber, USN (Ret.) was an iconoclastic military man–the best kind.

  8. May angels bear you to your heavenly reward, Commander. You will be in the finest
American military company with your kindred military iconoclast Colonel David Hackworth, USA.
An' we hardlie knew ya, Jeff…..

  9. My dear friend, colleague and co-author Jeff Huber, author of Bathtub Admirals and the web site Pen and Sword, and a well respected writer on military issues in print and internet based media, has passed away of natural causes in his home overlooking his beloved ocean in Virgina Beach VA. An actor, comedy improviser, retired Navy commander, jazz aficionado, animal lover and protector, wickedly incisive satirist, he was a man who never let his deep love of his country and fellow man get in the way of his rapier wit and brilliant critical analyses of them. Jeff was relieved of his command by his "broke heart" which was well worn by the ravages of both love and war. In his inscription to me on the leaf of his satire on military incompetence , Bathtub Admirals, Jeff wrote:"Denise, Always remember– that which does not kill you will give you congestive heart failure". Jeff taught me about the residue of pain that often lies beneath the pomp and circumstances of military service and ,together, we championed those with PTSD when no one was listening. His was the most impressive mind and wit I have ever had the good fortune to know and love. The loss of his voice of reason in the noisy, nasty, irrational public discourse is incalculable. Bon voyage, Commander. I'll never forget.

  10. Hard to accept that there'll be no more brilliant/funny posts at Pen & Sword to look forward to every week.

We've lost a righteous voice & scathing wit that reduced the pompous, the powerful, & the war-lovers to a puddle of goo.

    Peace, Jeff.
