How the Two Parties Control the Presidential Debates, Marginalize Dissent

John Glaser, October 03, 2012

George Farah, founder and executive director of Open Debates, tells Democracy Now that the two parties impose rules on the debates “to control various components of the debates to eliminate both third party candidates, unpredictable questions, and any threat to their dominance in our political process.”

  1. After being forced to watch a portion of the so-called "debate" this evening, for my daughters homework project, I was struck by just how farcical it all was. This wasn't a debate! This was a scripted joke.

  2. I was shocked at how much Romney lied during the debates. He lied continuous about trhe 5 trillion dollar taxcut, then couldn't tell us how he was going to pay for it without increasing the national debt except to say he would do with through closing"secret loopholes". I was also shocked to hear how much these 2 agreed with each other on most

He lied continuously about the 5 trillion dollar taxcut, then couldn't tell us how he was going to pay for it without increasing the national debt except to say he would do with through closing"secret loopholes" on which he refused to elaborate. It was obvious that Romney really had not plan whatsoever. I was also shocked to hear how much these 2 agreed with each other on most .

  4. Thanks , I’ve recently been searching for info approximately this topic for a while and yours is the best I’ve came upon so far. But, what concerning the conclusion? Are you certain in regards to the supply?|What i do not understood is in fact how you are not actually a lot more smartly-appreciated than you may be right now. You are very intelligent.

  5. Excellent presentation by George Farah. Thank you antiwar.com for posting this!

  6. So does the contract stipulate that this time, Mitt Romney shall be in the barrel?

And Warren "Tax Me More" Buffet contributes to the this muppet show? Grrreeeattt faggotry.

And in other breaking, earth-shattering news, the sun was reported to have set in the west last night and water was discovered to be wet.

  8. And yet tens of millions of so-called "grown ups" watch this obvious bullshit with baited breath and at rapt attention, thinking that it truly matters. This certainly bodes nothing but ill for the future of what little is left of this nation.

  9. I was also shocked to hear how much these 2 agreed with each other on most . .

"Shocked," Michael? Really? Was this the first time you've ever watched a presidential "debate?" ALL of them for at least the last two decades, that I can remember, have been glorified "agree-athons," nothing but carefully scripted, if obvious theater. This should make it clear even to the densest among us that it's all for show, pure entertainment targeted at the least bright among the Booboisie.

  10. My friend, after stumbling across what passes for "comment" on places like Breitbart, HuffPo, and other outlets of intellectual sewage, it was the unmistakeable stench of their warmongering and historical ignorance that convinces me that, like the old Mencken quote, "Americans deserve to get it good and hard"

  11. Remember that Buffet says the American Slaves are not taxed enough. Oy Vey! The arrogance!

  12. Oh, and as I needed to be reminded, the organization that sets up these so-called "debates" is none other than the Republicans and Democrats in conjunction with each other. Well, hells bells! And this evil group then has the temerity to legitimize itself and thus cut out anyone who threatens them. Then you have the propaganda poodles, AKA – the lick spittle nanny media, braying about how "serious" one serial liar is next to the other. It is to weep.

  13. He says the rich should pay more tax – the Masters not the Slaves – a minimum tax rate of 30% for those earning $1 million or more per year. But don't let facts interrupt your thought bites.

  14. Yea Dems and Reps in conjunction (I think it's called open conspiracy) and with corporate sponsorship according to the article.

  15. That 3rd parties are excluded is self-evident to one's own simple eyesight. Where are they, oh they're not there. But the extent of the rules (a 32 page or more document), the extent to which moderation has been made meaningless, and the history, this is information not everyone knows. So, it was a very informative article on how we got to this degree of screwed-upness.

  16. I don't know. It's propaganda. It's the degree to which the conversation is steered, by a joke of a media, by phony debates like this and so on. You can say that the people's warmongering is psychological pathology, and it might be, but they also don't really understand the horror of war nor how unnecessary most of the current wars are. Historical ignorance to be sure.

It's a lot of self-reinforcing things, maybe not the nicest people in the world (many of my fellow Americans), but then also manipulated at every turn. And then they dip thier toes in the sewage, surfing the HuffPo and so on, but there are not that many places online you can get a good quality argument, and so they seldom hear it, they might recognize it if they start to encounter it, but they never do. They should read more, they should go to alternative news sites (like antiwar.com), they should learn about what the debates really are (like from this nice Democracy Now article linked to) yes but they usually aren't devoting their lives to politics. The best informed of us, how many of us can claim that we didn't become political junkies to get this way?

  17. excuse me

we cant even get grass roots civic groups to demand an end to voter suppression, freedom of religion, witch hunts by law enforcement agencies, judges openly taking bribes to sway rulings. Open debates is just a luxury, you can have it after revolutionary blood is spilled in the streets, that is what the police state is preparing for

  18. Don't let facts interrupt your ignorance, Yonatan. Leftist Buffet claimed that "I pay a lower tax than my secretary". If he actually earned a salary for example from sitting on a board of directors, he would pay more than his secretary. What is lower is the annual payout to shareholders in a company. The tax on the share dividends seems low – but that is because the money has ALREADY been taxed, in the form of income tax! And the U.S. has the highest income tax in the world!

Yes, it's true. The U.S. corporate tax of 39.2 percent is the highest in the world. That's far more than your "minimum tax rate of 30%" suggestion, Yonatan, buddy. (But don't let facts interrupt your thought bites.)

So the money "the rich" get from salaries is taxed higher than Buffet's secretary's income. The dividends from holding shares are actually taxed twice, first in corporate tax on the company's profits and then when said profits are handed out to shareholders. That second time is what Buffet's "lower tax than my secretary" line refers to. In other words, he is lying through his teeth by leaving out the whole truth.

    Do you understand now?

  19. Correction: "in the form of corporate tax", it should say. As also shown in the rest of my post, but I probably need to point it out anyway, since most people will only read halfway or not at all before they start spouting off.

  20. It’s actually a cool and useful piece of info. I’m satisfied that you just shared this useful info with us. Please keep us up to date like this. Thank you for sharing.

  21. OBAMA OBAMA There really needs to be a reliable, consistent counter-news source who has the confidence and trust of US victim nations to get the straight scoop from their point of view.
