IN THIS ISSUE
This week’s top news:
Robert Gates: War on Iran Would Be ‘Catastrophic,’ Make Tehran Nukes ‘Inevitable’ : Neither the United States nor Israel is capable of wiping out Iran’s nuclear capability, former defense secretary Robert Gates said, and "such an attack would make a nuclear-armed Iran inevitable. They would just bury the program deeper and make it more covert."
Syria Formally Apologizes for Cross-Border Shelling into Turkey : Concerns that Syria’s internal conflict might be spilling over into neighboring countries and might prompt an outbreak of war were heightened sharply on Wednesday when the Turkish military launched artillery attacks against Syria in response to cross-border shelling which killed five civilians in southeastern Turkey.
Karzai: US War in Afghanistan ‘Will Not Succeed’ : America’s war in Afghanistan "will not be successful," Afghan President Hamid Karzai said on Thursday before accusing Western media of waging "psychological warfare" on his country.
Intelligence Effort Wasted Billions, Watched Citizens, Abused Civil Liberties : The government has wasted billions of dollars on an intelligence-sharing program created after 9/11 that is infringing on Americans’ civil liberties and using vast resources for functions that have nothing to do with terrorism, a Senate report has found.
Appeals Court Restores NDAA’s Indefinite Detention Provisions : A federal appeals court of three Obama-appointed judges rejected a previous ruling barring the government from enforcing the indefinite detention provisions in a recent national defense bill.
US Deployed Special Forces Across Northern Africa Embassies Ahead of Benghazi : Officials are now admitting that the White House signed off on a plan a year ago to build up special forces task forces around northern Africa, and had been deploying troops at embassies across the region for months in the lead-up to the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi.
