IN THIS ISSUE
This week’s top news:
Hagel: US Considering Arming Syria Rebels : Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel became the first US official to admit that the administration is "rethinking" its previous decision not to arm Syria’s rebels directly, though he insisted that no decision had been made and this was just one option being considered.
Pentagon Report: North Korea Still Trying to Make Nuke to Reach US : A new Pentagon report on North Korea, coming weeks after everyone was seemingly all North Korea’d out, comes with the same ominous but ultimately vague warning that the nation is still "working" on a nuclear missile to reach the United States.
Report: Netanyahu Fears US On Board With Arab League’s Peace Plan : Reports in the Israeli press now say Netanyahu is openly expressing concern to his aides that the US might be on board with Arab League’s "land-swap" peace proposal.
Boots on the Ground: First US Troops Arrive for Mali War : US ground troops have been assigned to "liaison support" for French and African troops in Mali. Officials say so far there are only "about 10" troops involved, but the number could grow as the war drags on.
UN: Force Feeding Gitmo Hunger Strikers Violates International Law: President Obama this week defended the US’s policy of force feeding detainees in Guantanamo Bay who are protesting their due process-free indefinite detention by going on a hunger strike. But UN human rights officials say it amounts to torture.
US Watchdog: Afghan Military Shrinking : Though the Pentagon’s own report claimed the October 2012 goal of getting the Afghan military up to 352,000 members was met, a new report today from the Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction (SIGAR) confirms that they didn’t.
