Imperialists Explain How to Rule the Middle East Through Force and Coercion

President Eisenhower with the Shah of Iran, who came to power as a result of a US-led coup

On behalf of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Brookings Institute, Max Boot and Michael Doran are openly arguing for a return to the mafia-like political warfare of the Cold War era. “With the end of the Cold War,” they lament unironically, “America’s tradition of political warfare all but died.”

How sad. The statement is anything but true, but Boot and Doran want the U.S. to recommence its long tradition of overthrowing democratically elected governments, covertly supporting foreign miscreants, distributing mass international propaganda, and dishing out torture and death through covert or third-party means. Specifically, this intensified campaign of coercion and warfare ought to be directed at – of course – the Middle East.

Clearly, the president needs options between military intervention and complete nonintervention — ways to influence developments in the Middle East without deploying Reaper drones or sending U.S. ground forces. To give Obama the tools he needs, the U.S. government should reinvigorate its capacity to wage “political warfare,” defined in 1948 by George Kennan, then the State Department’s director of policy planning, as “the employment of all the means at a nation’s command, short of war, to achieve its national objectives.” Such measures, Kennan noted, were “both overt and covert” and ranged from “political alliances, economic measures (as ERP — the Marshall Plan), and ‘white’ propaganda to such covert operations as clandestine support of ‘friendly’ foreign elements, ‘black’ psychological warfare and even encouragement of underground resistance in hostile states.”

“At their worst,” they admit, “such policies propped up strongmen with scant legitimacy — think Cuban president Fulgencio Batista and the shah of Iran — and invited anti-American ‘blowback.’ But at their best, they enabled the United States to aid freedom fighters behind the Iron Curtain and beyond.”

I dare say they are drastically understating the “worst” effects and dramatically overstating the “best.”

If we don’t reinvigorate America’s political warfare in the Middle East, they advise, then we will “cede the Middle East to malign actors such as Iran, Hezbollah, al Qaeda, and the Muslim Brotherhood,” and “risk creating a situation that will require, at some point in the future another massive military intervention by the United States.”

Notice the wording: if we don’t rule the Middle East by force and coercion, we will “cede” it to others. This of course implies the Middle East belongs to us. And of course those other bad guys that we’ll “cede” the region to are all “malign actors.” Not us though: our policies of supporting dictatorship, engaging in illegal wars that kill hundreds of thousands, economic warfare, covert action, cyber-attacks, and aid to terrorist groups — those aren’t malignant. Those are just to save everyone from other malignants.

  1. One thing has changed John.., those days the cop de Etta's was about kings and military forces.., these days is about Islamization which is the same as dictatorial regimes but with more restrictions on people's social life.., no alcohol, no twitter, no face book, no books beside the religious recommended by the regime, no girl friend, no friend at all unless you are going to fight the Syrian people with your terrorists friends, no freedom outside your home even there you are subject of search at any time, no freedom of choice beside what's been showed in your throat, no justice, no freedom of speech unless is about what is called shariah law which all the above is included in that. Turkey, Libya, Egypt and …. Are just an example.

  2. @mojo: "One thing has changed John.., those days the cop de Etta's [sic] was about kings and military forces.., these days is about Islamization" … [followed by reams of info as to why Islam is so bad.]

Me: Not quite. Given that 'the West' has been attacking the ME (more specifically, for its oil), from latest when UK changed its warships from coal to oil before WW1, what we simply do not know is what Islam may have been/developed into, had the Arab/Muslims been left in peace. There is evidence that the US ran subversion operations against Afghani Muslims to aid in recruiting Reagan's 'freedom fighters' to oppose Russia in Afghanistan, proof = school books were printed in the US and sent to Afghanistan, where they are still in demand in 2nd hand book shops. It's only a short deductive-step to suspect that IF the purported extremism is as bad as some allege, THEN it may have been encouraged to be so by the filthy US subversion.

Not so BTW, note that covert 2nd-party operations against sovereign nations approximates "supreme international criminality" and as 'covert' means secret, it also fits the definition of conspiracy (= secret plan to commit a crime; plot[POD]). Ah. So the headline article provides proof of actual US conspiracies, presumably here *not* coming from some daft conspiracy theorist. Now, what about jet-fuel fires melting steel?

  3. Johan and IDHOlme: USA government back in 1970s have promised to UN not to conduct, plan nor orchestrate any more military cop, CIA also have assured the senate on the issue. What you and Johan is missing here is that: all of these cop de Etta's from South America to Iran to Africa been about people's democracy stoping it by either a military cop and now Islamization of the matter. Iran cop de Etta organized and orchestrated by CIA and English with the knowledge of both government. it was about a democratic elected government, a democrat and a nationalist man to be replaced by the USA puppet.

Knowing that democratic or a functioning democracy in any country will develop into a economic and political opposition for USA vulture capitalism agendas for the world.., then democracy needs to be replaced by what is by the Bush regime called "the enemy of my enemy is my friend".., using islamist all over as in Iraq and Afghanistan and before him by Bill Clinton in Balkan war, which the enemy of a functioning democracy, at this point in time, is non then religious extremism.., at the same time USA have no other power, either militarily or civilians, beside such extremism to work with.., simply no one wants to work or help out with US world agendas.., US government simply uses its last option to stop or in any way possible for such or any kind of meaningful democracy to develop. Another example is Afghanistan.., Osama bin laden was a Wahhabis related to Saudis family.., Shah Masoud, another democrat and afghan nationalist was assassinated by Saudis. Afghanistan was given to Osama Bin Laden as a religious sanctuary if he would fight and defeat the USSR occupation.., the other is Egypt and the other is Libya and the other is Syria. All that is about creating turmoil and milking the cow with Saudis and UAE paying for the operation, in return the sunny Muslims will be the one dominating and keeping the USA military bases and cooperate with US vulture capitalism agendas. Look up Paul Wolfowitz idea for USA.

  4. Just joined this site. If we want to end war we have to end government. Why do we need rulers? Government is an antiquated concept. Unfettered free markets can do everything better, cheaper, faster and more efficiently. Anarcho-Capitalism is it's name and it is the most logical, moral, ethical and efficient means of "running society". A great introduction and a great read is "The Market For Liberty" by Tannehill. Also, "For A New Liberty" by Rothbard. There is a YOUTUBE site "Anarchast" that has over 70 episodes. Constitutions cannot protect us, only the rejection of government altogether. Peace.

  5. Article writing is also a fun, if you be acquainted with afterward you can write otherwise it is complicated
    to write.

  6. Islam by itself if is a anti imperialistic movement and its constitution is mentioning this political agenda is a good idea.., yet its non democratic agendas as shariah laws is what is against people's freedom as freedom of political and social movements. Islamization of the world is the new fashion created by Bush regime and present US government has it as its main political and social "change" or "nation building" move toward Islamic nations. What you people are talking about has nothing to do with the issues regarding democracy, how democracy is to be achieved by other nations in question and how it should work for the people. My question to you people with overwhelming intelligent and knowledge is this: If USA is a democratic system then why the regime is so eager to implement and support the idea in Islamization of Islamic nations by supporting islamic terrorism.?

  7. EXACTLY! The Erdogan regime in Turkey, for example, which is step-by-step destroying the secular system and society of Turkey, is fully supported by the U.S. government and NATO.

  8. @ANCAP308: "Unfettered free markets can do everything better, cheaper, faster and more efficiently. Anarcho-Capitalism …"

    Me: No. Defs:

{anarchism n. political theory that all government and laws should be abolished. [French: related to *anarchy]
anarchist n. advocate of anarchism. anarchistic adj.
anarchy n. disorder, esp. political. anarchic adj. [Greek an- without, arkhe rule]} [POD]

    Two proofs (from many):

    1. Bank deregulation, by Clinton, say (Democrats = purported people's friends), enabled the GFC but more; allowing investment banks to merge with trading banks puts *all* depositors' $s at risk (because investment here = gambling, and *every* gamble results in a loss for one side); one proof of the end result of such risk is shown in Cyprus = massive theft from depositors' accounts. Fractional-reserve banking is in any case a rip-off; see Ellen Brown and the Bank of North Dakota.

    2. Daft results from the combination of neoliberalism + globalisation include a) increasing primary unemployment in 1st world countries (like USA, say), b) lower wages for those in 1st world countries still with jobs, and c) extremely lower wages for those in the 3rd world doing the off-shored jobs. What this means is that the consumer-spending pool gets lower on average, and lower overall, in turn reducing total sales and demotivating production. The +ve reverse is 'Fordism,' whereby wages and prices were set such that the workers could buy the products, and both sides could enjoy the fairer compromise. A final proof of "daft results" is ~47mio in US on food stamps. Total anarchy would condemn most of these to starve to death – would ANCAP308 accept any responsibility? A: Unlikely; but say 'hello' to a self-selected, possible accessory to mass murder.

Anarchism (total laissez-faire) would destroy civilisation (= cooperation rather than confrontation); we already see it whereby the two worst rogue-regimes ignore civilised behaviour to mass-murder for spoil. The entire world cannot and will not survive much longer as it is, let alone considering increased adoption of the 'laws of the jungle,' if current (already anarchistic) trends are allowed to continue.

Unfettered free markets *may* do 'everything' better, cheaper, faster and more efficiently – but IF the nett result is mostly disaster except for an ever-more obscenely-rich <1%, THEN no thanks.

Riddle me this; Q: Where, exactly, did you get the idea?

Advice: Before choosing some possibly erring ideology, better check projected results for acceptability, hmmm?

  9. @mojo: "If USA is a democratic system then why the regime is so eager to implement and support the idea in Islamization of Islamic nations by supporting islamic terrorism?"

Me; quick answer is: Wrong question.

Aside 1: I think you and I are basically on the same 'team' = for truth + justice = peace, and I recognise that you are working in a 2nd language, so well done. Your "cop de Etta" is "coup d'état" in English, actually 'borrowed' from French.

Aside 2: When we talk of the US, we mean the *regime*, not the people. The regime has identifiable parts; from Eisenhower's MI-complex, we can now see the M/I/C/$4a†-plex = military, industrial, Congress (US-speak for parliament); $ = banksters, 4 = 4th estate = MSM+PFBCs, 'a' = academia incl. think-tanks, † = the churches.

Lemma: It is easy to prove 'Western' systems of government are *not* proper "of, by, for the people" democracies but 'pretend' ones = sham; 1) dumbed-down = lied-to voters, 2) false-dichotomy two-party systems, often bipartisan (on war and economics, plus other areas) = un- & anti-democratic (voters have *zero* effective choice) and 3) when elected, most 'representatives' sell-out to the <1% and/or 5th column-lobbies (latter = treason).

Now; US is *not* a democratic system (except cynically in name only); it is 1stly an oligarchy, 2ndly (more importantly) a tyranny and 3rdly, a tyranny mostly of psychopaths.

Next; US is *not* pushing 'Islamization' but rather the opposite; it is pushing a 'clash of civilisations' war, where the US' *chosen*, partly *manufactured* 'enemy' is Islam (because lots of Arab/Muslims (=A/Ms) sit on or near lakes of oil). The very best illustration of this was the 9/11 exploit, whereby 19 mostly Saudi-Arabians attacked the US using hijacked aircraft. (The planes may well have been real, but Q: Can jet-fuel fires melt steel? Really? And cause *3* towers to oh, so symmetrically fall?) The mainly US-led MSM+PFBCs (MSM = mainstream media (print and broadcast), aka 'corrupt&venal' + PFBCs = publicly-financed broadcasters) have done so well with lying propaganda that many of the dumbed-down have developed startlingly bigoted attitudes towards A/Ms.

You are correct with "US vulture capitalism agendas," one prime purpose seems to be 'accumulation at *any* cost' and another is to counter (= usually attempted destruction of) any ideology, country or person which/who gets in their way. IF that means collaboration with some 'enemy' (as when they allied with the Taliban vs. Russia in Afghanistan, then Libya, Syria etc.), THEN they will do it. The 'bottom line' for the US is the <1% getting ever more obscenely richer; so much so that they are prepared to mass-murder to pursue it, and they are *so stupid* that they may well cripple our once jewel-like planet's comfortable-life supporting ecosphere via extreme CO2-pollution on their way.

Sorry if it seems complicated, but I just can't make it much simpler.

  24. All that of your corrections and other matters comes to one thing, USA and the Neo Europeans politics are no longer based on democracy but agendas in hypocrisy with no visible nor the understanding in people's social rights. The growth or development of such politics (domestically) have reached a point in Neo Fascism forcing these "Neo comers" as David Cameron, Obama the Swedish Neo fascism and etc., in terms of these regimes world interests, the only politic that they can follow is to act accordingly in continuing their support for extremism and cooperation with their masters as Saudis and other tyrant system. Neo fascism is created by Bill Clinton and Madeline Albright during and after Balkan war, as Hitler used the Muslims in Eastern Europe to achieve his goals, so did the USA and NATO country's by bombing and then dividing Yugoslavia among themselves, from that point on the fact in Islamization of the world has been the priority of western militarism regimes.

  25. @mojo: "Neo Europeans"

"Neo" just means 'new,' and there's not much new about Europeans.

Two words are in use, "neocon" which is short for 'neoconservative,' nothing much new about them, nor are they really 'conservative,' although many are reputed to have switched from the 'left' to the 'right.' They are reputed to *not* be 'USA-firsters,' rather the opposite and entwined with a particular traitorous 5th column, namely the aggressive alien invaders and violent ethnic-cleansers of a certain area in the middle east (=ME).

"Neoliberal" are adherents to and/or boosters of the erring-economic ideology otherwise known as 'economic rationalism' or '(free) market economics,' where 'free' often means 'free to rip the people off.'

Another neo is neocolonialism; there's certainly more rather than less of that going on, see ethnic-cleansers above, etc..

    Then: "with no visible"

    If you mean 'secret,' yes.

As for "social rights," there're two aspects, a) the respect for people's rights and b) the social support usually provided by reasonable governments; both of these go 'missing' under neoliberal tax cuts (cut mostly off the rich = the rich pay lower taxes and the governments have less to spend).

I'm not too sure if "fascism" is the correct word (neo or not), but I don't understand your "cooperation with their masters as Saudis and other tyrant system."

I think Islam and Muslims are incidentals. I think that earlier the UK then lately the US are determined to control ME oil, for at least 4 reasons, a) they want the oil *revenue* to enrich their <1%, b) they wish to *prevent* perceived rivals like Russia and China getting much of it, and c) to make themselves 'the boss' = *hegemony*. Also and perhaps over-riding, d) they 'support' the alien invader/violent ethnic-cleansers.

The UK back then, and US now, exploit divisions between Muslim groups only as a means to 'divide & rule' the ME. Once more; Islam is incidental and exploited by the marauders; if the locals were of some other religious persuasion, then the problems caused would be with that other, *not* Islam per se.

  26. @ IDHOLM, idea behind my way in writing is to inform people, by me using the wording Neo Europeans you need to read rest of my way of writings. As you point out " Neo Europeans" (pointing at europeans government) or fir that matter usa government are the Neo fascism with agendas in Neo Colonialism performing it in a fascistic way. As I said before, the question of Islamization of the world is a platform against democracy adopted by the west hindering the development of a functioning democracy for countries-nation that seeking to achieve it, adopting it as its social platform which in time such development will become a object in what is imperialism interests, the vulture capitalism is the primary interests here, the other is the USA militarism.

  27. Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though you relied on
the video to make your point. You definitely know what youre talking about,
why throw away your intelligence on just posting videos to your
blog when you could be giving us something informative to read?

  28. @mojo: "… which in time such development will become a object in what is imperialism interests, the vulture capitalism is the primary interests here, the other is the USA militarism."

Yes, and thank you for the courteous conversation.

This dreadful imperialism, oppressing countries and peoples in order to rip resources off without paying the sovereign owners fair prices, has been going on almost continuously – although the post-WW2 *lying* propaganda asserted otherwise. But now we can see past and through the MSM+PFBCs lies. The fault lies in *both* the for-profit MSM and the publicly finance broadcaster (PFBCs), the latter a true scandal; they should all be sacked then thrown into gaol.

I agree that imperialist intervention in Islam is to divide and rule, but it has much more to do with the rip-offs than democracy. In its current ('representative') form, democracy is *designed* to fail; since representatives almost invariably go corrupt.

You may be interested in this quote:

Bernays, Propaganda (1928): "The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country."

This is the 4th estate dumbing the voters down as part of your neofascism.

Of course, lies are only deployed to deceive; manipulation destroys not 'merely' truth but also freedom.

So much for their vaunted 'values.'

PS The part-duplicate posts in the sequence beginning July 4th, 2013 at 6:51 am were caused by the comment-censor-bot objecting to the word "je*el," with a 'w' in place of the '*'.
