Posted June 26, 2001 Popup Ads Please do not post anything from the LA Times anymore (Zogby). They have many more popup ads than any other site I have ever seen and the ads tie up my computer so that it runs too slowly. If you know of any software that blocks such ads, please let the world know. Thank you. ~ P. Nicolai Webmaster, Eric Garris, replies: I have heard of software that blocks them, but I haven't tried them. If you use Netscape you can go to:
This will disable popup ads and many other annoying things. It will also disable some features on some sites that you might want, but it is a trade-off.
Democratic Israel [Regarding columnist Ran HaCohen:] It is sad to see that a Jew would refer to his own people in such a negative way. You ought to be ashamed. You act as if you are fighting for peace, but the effect of your words is only to tear down your own people.
Yes, we Jews have our problems, but the government of Israel was elected by its people (which is really a lot more than you can say for any of our neighbors in the Mid-East, including your friend, president-for-life, billion dollars in his bank account, Yasser Arafat.) ~ D. Steinberg Ran HaCohen replies: Nathan, Amos and every other biblical prophet would be quite surprised to see Jewish-ness defined as "tribal loyalty"; in fact, their definition was the very opposite. As for Arafat: his corrupted dictatorship does not make the Israeli atrocities any better.
China's Youth [Regarding Sascha Matuszak's column, "China's Youth Revolution":]
…I myself have experienced China's education system, from a primary school in Beijing until finishing a 4-year mechanical engineering study in Beijing Institute of Technology in 1995.
Yes, in campus life we didn't care about communism's inequities, but when we entered the society, nobody is immune from today's rotten reality. I worked as a salesman (because I studied mechanical engineering, which can guarantee me no chance to get a decent technical job in China), selling Swedish products to China's state enterprises. I hate corruption, so I avoid doing it, but I can't sell my products. Now I'm unemployed and studying German, hoping to get admission from one of the German universities. I don't know what I can do for China now, though I have a firm determination to build the socialist motherland from my childhood, a product of China's propaganda style education, which is still going on.
I can only pray for China, because I don't know what I can do, everything is controlled by the Communist Party. I want to flee. ~ X.N.
