Posted July 3, 2001 The Next Prince Lazar In his June 28 …column, Nebojsa Malic wonders where the next Prince Lazar will come from. The UN and NATO's stupid and criminal seizure of Slobodan Milosevic will …put the prince's crown right on Slobo's head. Instead of letting the Yugoslav people try Milosevic for crimes he committed against them and letting them, the ones who elected him president, sit in judgement and render a blow to his legacy, the international community couldn't wait to bring him to The Hague. The tribunal has no legitimacy in Yugoslavia; and if it seems he's accepting a Christ-like burden of Serbia's sins in the war, Slobo's legacy will not be one of defeat and surrender, but of martyrdom: Prince Lazar returned, exposing NATO's lies and the whole stink of the Balkan Wars and the complicity of the West in them. (I would love to hear how the U.S. and Richard Holbrooke propped him up from 1995-1998 when many in Serbia wanted to see him go and what really happened at Rambouillet.) So victor in all of this could be the one now sitting in a Dutch jail. Instead of humiliation from his own people, the West chose to seek its vengeance . And yet it may turn out, they'll be the one's crowning him the new Prince Lazar and the songs and the legends in the future will carry the name of Slobo. ~ Sean Scallon, East Ellsworth, WI
Change in the Weather You can easily follow attention's shift of CNN towards "good and the bad guys" in the Balkans just by watching weather report. A month ago, 99% of the Earth's population didn't even know that some country named Albania existed, and now you can even know what the weather will look like in Tirana on a daily basis. Beograd was there as well after last October's election, but Belgrade is not a "capital" of the Balkans any more. It's Tirana at the moment, and if they continue (and they will) with this nonsense regarding Kosovo, you'll be able to park in front of your TV every hour, to see what the weather in Pristina is. Those guys [who] maintain [the] oil pipeline from the Black Sea to Albania must know what is going on in that part of the world. ~ T. Crnogorac
Turn on the TV [Regarding the Backtalk letter, "Albanian & Montenegrin Writers":] Is Ruben Avxhiu, serious? Antiwar.com is one of a handful of places where it is possible to read the real news. Most British and US newspapers are devoted to the cause of Albanian secessionism and the demonization of the Serbs (and now the Macedonians). All Mr. Avxhiu need do for his fill of this is open the paper or turn on the TV. ~ Tara McCormack
Selective Justice [Milosevic] will not be tried in Belgrade! He must go to the international court so they can beat him up as a warning to the leaders of other small …nations [of] what defiance of NATO succeeds in bringing on those who have the audacity to defend the sovereignty of their nation! All this as Clinton and Gorbachev trot the globe to adoration! These two war criminals, …whose crimes are of magnitudes greater than those of Milosevic, are free to go about their business of being paid to run their mouths as if what they have to say is truthful and/or important. Selective justice is the world norm. ~ K. Hayes |
