Jeff also gave an excellent lecture entitled “War Is The Health Of The State,” with a historical overview of how war is used to justify and increase government power, with the conclusion that the state is essentially a war-making institution. Jeff also gave an excellent lecture at UT entitled, “How An Anarchist Society Would Provide National Defense: A Solution To Libertarianism’s Hardest Problem.” Although the lecture, given back in 1979, is dated by concrete examples from the Cold War with the former Soviet Union, it still makes a good historical case, and the extensive Q&A period (where Jeff really shines) also addresses the WWII example that is often cited as a justification of state-based defense.
