Scott Horton Interviews Chris Hedges
Scott Horton,
December 02, 2008
Chris Hedges, author of War is a Force that Gives Us Meaning, discusses the anti-occupation motives of terrorists, the similarities of extremists that transcend religion and culture, how a U.S. economic collapse could usher in a popular uprising of the Christian Right, the desperate and mostly ignored situation in the Gaza Strip and the terrible consequences of a war with Iran.
MP3 here. (36:03)
Chris Hedges is a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter, senior fellow at The Nation Institute, lecturer at Princeton University and the author of War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning and American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War On America.

Obama said that Iran should be barred from importing gasoline. That´s a Declaration of War, the same as HR 362 and SR 580 which were shelved for now.
I´ll recommend former Trident missile engineer Bob Aldridge´s recent book America in Peril. http://www.plrc.org

Hedges seems pretty clear that we’re heading for a totalitarian takeover, from the Right (meaning the people who call themselves “Right” at the moment, not real conservatives or libertarians) – the fascist armies (most notably Blackwater) are already in place, and the people are increasingly desperate for change. Obama is clearly not going to provide it.
Scott tried to get him to give any reasons for hope a couple of times, but he doesn’t seem to have much.

When I click on play, a notice comes up saying “error opening file” and I can’t listen to the interview. I went back to check with interviews I’d already heard, and the same thing happens. Flash-Player seems to work o.k. at other sites. Any ideas ?

Machiavelli recommends accusing your enemies of the very crimes you commit. Al-Qaeda is a database of jihadis maintained by the CIA. “The base,” get it? THERE IS NO SUCH ORGANIZATION AS AL-QAEDA. It’s a mask used by various parties, especially the U.S. government. Not that we could expect any truth from someone who used to work for the NY Times.

If most of the highjackers were middle class idealists, then it seems Bush’s policies have been a war on terror campaign. Bush was trying to get rid of the middle class idealists with his trickle-down economics tainted with neocon McCarthyism in this country and around the world. Will Obama continue the anti-middle class campaign or will he be labeled as a terrorist sympathizer?

Excellent interview Scott.
I’d love to hear Chris and Ron Paul in a dialogue.
Any chance?

I don’ t know how likely a Religious Right take-over is, but throughout my lifetime, there have been more and more born-agains who’ve wanted the US to be something like colonial Massachussetts or Cromwell’s Commonwealth in England (and the colonies). There’s a sort of false memory that just a few decades ago, the US was totally “Christian” (undefined) and everything was ipsy-pipsy, with none of our familiar social ills.
That’s far from the case, of course. All the familiar crimes and sins have always flourished, and every generation of born-again preachers has ranted in the same way about moral decline, blah, blah, blah. Check out the sermons from any time or place in the last 2000 years.
