While having plenty of sympathy for the appalling way indigenous peoples have been and continue to be treated, I’m not buying the idea that in native American culture there is some kind of libertarian wonderland just waiting to blossom. Traditional societies the world over have always valued the group over the individual (notwithstanding honored individual heroes, chiefs and so on, whose exploits are usually seen in the context of furthering the tribe’s well-being anyway). Land and resources were shared for the benefit of the entire group. That’s how they survived in a world that did not offer much margin for self-indulgence.

I’m sure that sticks in the libertarian craw, but so be it. I’d be fascinated to read any real evidence (not just assertion) to the contrary.
