Nebojsa Malic, author of the “Moments of Transition” column on Antiwar.com, discusses the unacceptable-by-design Rambouillet Agreement, how the U.S.-led NATO war against Serbia set a precedent for future extralegal wars, the realpolitik goals behind U.S. interest in the Balkans and the current condition of the gangster state known as Kosovo.

  1. Great interview- shocking stuff.

And why is a guy like Richard Holbrooke still around? His reputation should’ve made him radioactive. Didn’t realize he was on the AIG board…

  2. Great interview Scott and Nebojsa. I think you should have more interviews on the Balkans and eastern european matters in general.

I did disagree with certain details of Malic’s interpretation of history though. I don’t think it can be said that the Communists ever tried to break up Yugoslavia.. They certainly tried to break up the serbs by drawing the borders such that they would be in minority, but the communists did not try to break up yugoslavia as Nebojsa said at one point in the interview. That is unless he meant the so-called communists of the 80s-90s who were really nationalists.

  3. Superb. Excellent listening. Nebojsa sounds quite the authority on this issue to me.

  4. @marco, he was actually refering to the programme of the Communists in the 1930s before they took power. At the time Yugoslavia was pursuing buerocratic centralisation and cultural unitarism all presided over by a Serb king and his mainly Serb court party. So the Communists simply wrote their programme with everything in the reverse, emphasising cultural differences between the Yugoslavs, demanding a break-up of the country and rilling up against the `Serbian burgeoise nationalism`.

Of course they made an almost complete U-turn on centralisation and to a point issues of culture once they gained power, but they never got over their fear of Serbian nationalism so they tried to split up the Serbs (and the Croats to a smaller extent) among as many of the new administrative units as they could.

  5. Where can I listen to the Clinton speech referenced in the interview?

  7. Scott,

One of the best, or at least more enlightening, or maybe I should say, confirming, interviews yet. I am so glad you asked the question, Why? Why the Balkans? And in a matter of a few sentences he tied up the whole imperial project — The Great Game, The Grand Chessboard, etc, etc.

  8. Isn’t it pretty obvious why Yugoslavia was broken up into separate states and Bosnia became the hub and a base of international terrorism connecting Muslim militants from Europe and the Middle East?

It was to train, recruit and be a transit point for organised crime and drug trafficking into Europe to support Chechen and Central Asian militants.
Most senior figures fighting Chechnya were former Bosnia field commanders and Abdullah Bin Laden was running terrorist training camps there for Chechen militants as revealed in the 2002 Bosnian court case.

The Wall Street Journal reported in 2001 that:
“for the past 10 years, the most senior leaders of al Qaeda have visited the Balkans,
including bin Laden himself on three occasions between 1994 and 1996.
The Egyptian surgeon turned terrorist leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri has operated terrorist training camps, weapons of mass destruction factories and money-laundering and drug-trading networks throughout Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Bosnia.
This has gone on for a decade. Many recruits to the Balkan wars came originally from Chechnya, a jihad in which Al Qaeda has also played a part.”

The Nazis did the same thing during WW2 called Operation Blue eliminating Serb resistance.

Its amazing how every terrorist attack since and including 9/11 militants or groups involved were originally recruited or had some connection to Bosnia and Chechnya.
Even the militants used in the 98 embassy bombings were recruited from Chechen camps in Bosnia which Abdullah was also funding.

I think that’s what this international terrorism thing really is an international Islamic mercenary force used by the CIA to fight there proxy wars for geo-political gain in oil and resource rich areas Algeria, the Balkans, Russia’s South and Central Asia.

It’s all part of Brezinski’s Grand Chessboard .

“It follows that America’s primary interest is to help ensure that no single power comes to control this geopolitical space and that the global community has unhindered financial and economic access to it.” (p148)
“In fact, an Islamic revival – already abetted from the outside not only by Iran but also by Saudi Arabia – is likely to become the mobilizing impulse for the increasingly pervasive new nationalisms, determined to oppose any reintegration under Russian – and hence infidel – control.” (p. 133).
“The most immediate task is to make certain that no state or combination of states gains the capacity to expel the United States from Eurasia or even to diminish significantly its decisive arbitration role.” (p. 198)

“Uzbekistan, nationally the most vital and the most populous of the central Asian states, represents the major obstacle to any renewed Russian control over the region. Its independence is critical to the survival of the other Central Asian states, and it is the least vulnerable to Russian pressures.” (p. 121)

“Uzbekistan is, in fact, the prime candidate for regional leadership in Central Asia.” (p.130)
