I remember when Texas oil men brought the Taliban to the US to close a pipeline deal in Afghanistan

12/14/1997

Oil barons court Taliban in Texas By Caroline Lees

THE Taliban, Afghanistan's Islamic fundamentalist army, is about to sign a £2 billion contract with an American oil company to build a pipeline across the war-torn country.

The Islamic warriors appear to have been persuaded to close the deal, not through delicate negotiation but by old-fashioned Texan hospitality. Last week Unocal, the Houston-based company bidding to build the 876-mile pipeline from Turkmenistan to Pakistan, invited the Taliban to visit them in Texas. Dressed in traditional salwar khameez, Afghan waistcoats and loose, black turbans, the high-ranking delegation was given VIP treatment during the four-day stay.

The Taliban ministers and their advisers stayed in a five-star hotel and were chauffeured in a company minibus. Their only requests were to visit Houston's zoo, the Nasa space centre and Omaha's Super Target discount store to buy stockings, toothpaste, combs and soap. The Taliban, which controls two-thirds of Afghanistan and is still fighting for the last third, was also given an insight into how the other half lives.

Oh Noes! Terror! Fear! Under the bed quickl!! Nukes!!!

"The Taliban didn’t advance to within 30 miles of “some major city,” as the host says half-chuckling. They were within drivin distance of the capital city, Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad."
I was not aware that "driving distance" was a more specific unit of measurement, then 30 miles.
Islamabad is the new capital and purposely built close to the tribal area's deep in land to have governance spread beyond the old capital Karachi.

So is our treatment of Pakistan a precursor for the new policy toward Israel or are we going to continue the double standard (we give an ultimatum to the government to shape up or thier funding will dry up)?
Or is this war an attempt to field test the next set of military weaponry and tactics (because we have to prove our might by proving the the land war in Asia statement isn't true for the only world superpower)?
Or is the Pakistan/Afghanistan conflict a way to expand the narcotics trade (remember the wicked witch of the west had Dorothy run through a field of poppies and was bogged down, no we're not in Kansas)

Mr. Margolis is right in reducing the highly exagerated views of Taliban takeover threats of Pakistan's governing structure, being propagated by likes of Fox & even NBC. Its utter nonsense! A country that has food security going back at least 30 years, (yes please disregard the spectre of "poor hungry insecure Pakistanis") that has the service of at least 3 rivers waters, with the largest irrigated area in the world, where starvation deaths are a rarity seldom seen or heard (unlike India which suffers from 25,000 to 200,000 such starvation deaths every year for the past 60 democratic years), that has held its own in 3 wars against a hostile neighbour 6-8 times its size and has been the recipient of consistent negative propaganda about its people & government -- we will survive this internalized threat too!! Yes the Taliban need to be routed & rooted out because they represent a distortion of our society & religious values, which unfortunately had been abetted & nurtured by the CIA & our own intelligence too enamoured of CIA itself -- as it suited the world view of a dumbwitted Reagan & a zealot dictator Zia, both too under the spell of the neocon worldview. Please have a more informed & healthy view of us and support us -- dont pull the rug by tarnishing us as a people.

The sane immediately recognised that which the American military already know: the bombardment of civilian centres in Afghanistan is the surest way to strengthen your enemy. The end result means a greater American presence in the region and the added discouraging prospect of a central Asian conflagration involving significant powers.

The Gwadar deep sea ports being constructed in southern Balochistan and its direct competitor the Indian bankrolled Chah bahar sea port just across the Iranian border are both strategically positioned at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz. Super highways and rail systems are being constructed to service both ports with Gwadar linking up with Pakistan’s’ main transportation network. Eventually, Gwadar, will link with China, granting China optional transportation routes placating China’s fear of a US blockade in the Malacca Straits.

Central Asia is in for a good old superpower showdown the United States has bigger fish to fry than the Taliban.
