Ray McGovern, former senior analyst at the CIA, discusses USS Liberty survivor Terry Halbardier’s belated Silver Star award, LBJ’s personal involvement in preventing military aid from reaching the besieged USS Liberty, two major theories explaining why Israel attacked the ship and Adm. Mike Mullen’s groundbreaking mention of the Liberty in an apparent attempt to dissuade Israel from attacking Iran.

MP3 here. (32:06)

Ray McGovern was a CIA analyst for 27 years, from the John F. Kennedy administration to that of George H. W. Bush. His articles appear on Consortium News and Antiwar.com.

  1. Have any of the Liberty survivors written their memoirs?

  2. OK, why the fuck are you guys being so fucking JOVIAL about this?????????

WTF is up with that?! “Oh well, Israel is “our ally” after all, it MUST have been a “mistake”"

And THEN, the people who run this site MUST “moderate” ANY post containing the words “(Z)ionist” or “(J)ew”.

How long are you going to take it in the ass from Israel and it’s continental (Z)ionist supporters???

    Pathetic.

  3. From Body of Secrets, by James Bamford:

“To prevent anyone from escaping the badly wounded ship [the USS Liberty], the Israelis even destroyed the few surviving life rafts that were put into the water following the call to abandon ship. ‘I watched with horror as the floating life rafts were riddled with holes,’ said Lieutenant Lloyd Painter, in charge of the evacuation. ‘No survivors were planned for this day!’” (page 219)

“In the days following the attack, the Israeli government gave the U.S. government a classified report that attempted to justify the claim that the attack was a mistake. On the basis of that same report, an Israeli court of inquiry completely exonerated the government and all those involved. No one was ever court-martialed, reduced in rank, or even reprimanded. On the contrary, Israel chose instead to honor Motor Torpedo Boat 203, which fired the deadly torpedo at the Liberty. The ship’s wheel and bell were placed on prominent display at the naval museum, among the maritime artifacts of which the Israeli navy was most proud” (page 229).

  4. Duncan,

Perhaps you are not irony enabled. Time to see if you can get your irony button turned on. Oh, and check your snark detector too.

  5. Had the Israelis been held accountable for the attack on the Liberty, they would not have been emboldened to commit 9/11. And that’s no “crazy conspiracy theory”.

  6. Hi Scott:

Can Ray shed any light on my and my brother’s assassination?

    Best Regards,

    JFK’s Ghost

  7. Thanks, Scott and Ray.

First I’ve heard of this event. Perhaps 6/8/1967 is another day to celebrate the cowardice and treason rampant in the U.S. Government.

  8. to add to Rocket 99, Bamford’s book Body of Secrets came out in 2001. I read it shortly thereafter. I’ve never heard any reference to it in the popular media, even tho Chapter 7, titled “Blood”, is 55 pages of cold hard fact, including the culpability of LBJ is calling back the Saratoga’s jets. Maybe the Saratoga’s skipper could have traded the rest of his career for those 25 “extra” lives Ray McGovern talks about, but telling LBJ to go to hell

  9. Ray and you speculated on whether any US politician has ever mentioned the USS Liberty before. I just want to let you know that one US politician has been unafraid to take on the Israel Lobby and has paid a severe price. I’m referring to Cynthia McKinney. Scott, maybe one day you can have her on your show.

Here’s what she had to say after her boat, the Dignity, (which was attempting to break the Israeli naval blockade of Gaza in order to deliver food and medicine to the Palestinian people) was rammed and nearly sunk by the Israeli navy. Afterwards Israel tried to blame the Dignity for running into the Israeli ship. Sound familiar?

Free Gaza boat rammed by Israeli Navy – Cynthia McKinney was one of the passengers

Said McKinney: “Our boat was rammed three times, twice in the front, once on the side…. What the Israelis are saying is outright disinformation.”

McKinney compared the Israeli action against the Dignity to the attack on a U.S. naval vessel during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. “I recall that there was another boat that was attacked by Israelis, and it was the U.S.S Liberty.” Thirty-four crewmen died and 170 were wounded by fire from Israeli planes and torpedo boats. The Israelis claim it was a case of mistaken identity. “People would like to forget about the U.S.S. Liberty,” said McKinney, “but I haven’t forgotten about it and the people who were on that ship have not forgotten what happened to them.”

  10. From CNN

    http://edition.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/07/09/uss

"For your info, it is apparently an Arab ship," says ground control.

    "Roger," says the pilot.

"It is an Egyptian supply ship," says ground control.

    "Roger," comes the response.

  11. Shame on all you American’s in the US of Israel, with your Aipac New Killer in Chief,[the half-cast bastard]in the Dirty Black White. The ‘Chosen’will start World War 3,you all will die for your Masters of the Synagogue of Lucifer,June 1967 the USS Liberty was a fucking War Crime and 9/11 was a inside JOB,your Constitution has gone down the ‘john’CHANGE ?not for you retards, you SCHMUCKS.

  12. WMERA is funded with Saudi Arabian money.

  13. Anti war won’t say a word about WMERA. I wonder why?

  14. What?!!?? At least one pilot told ground control that “it’s an american ship..” He was told to attack it. He responded that it was an American ship and flew back to the monstrous state of Israel.
It was deliberate. They knew it was an american ship. They made passing runs and were close enough for our crewmen to wave at the pilots. They wanted to kill all aboard and blame it on the Egyptians ( which they first tried to do ) and drag us into their war..
IF the Egyptians had committed this cowardly act ( the ship was virtually defenseless..one or two 5o cals on deck..) the only question that would have been asked in the halls of Congress would have been, ” just how high is the rubble going to bounce in Cairo? “

  15. Fwiw, Ray McGovern, Philip Giraldi and Eric Margolis are my favorite guests of yours.

You should try to get the Australian Depty Prime Minister Tim Fisher on about this – he wrote an article about the Liberty in an Australian newspaper. I wonder if he is keen to discuss it again. Probably not with ‘antiwar.com’ as he supported the war.

  16. Best regards to Terry Halbardier on the award of the Silver Star. He (and the entire ship's company of U.S.S. LIBERTY) performed gallantly.

If Israel had been given the pasting they deserved at the time, maybe they wouldn't be such international criminals today. (Then again, maybe not. The U.S.–their sole friend and protector–overlooks any outrage(s) they commit.) Israel needs a righteous ass-kicking from Obama if the Muslim world is to be convinced of his sincerity.

eCAHNomics: James Ennes, Jr. wrote "Assault on the LIBERTY." Ennes was one of LIBERTY's officers (he was either a jaygee or a senior grade at the time). Read his book. He's utterly convinced that the Israeli attack was deliberate.

  17. Dare we hope? Is the awarding of this silver star, at long last, an indication that the tide is finally turning against the Israel lobby?

  18. 20. Assume for one second that the pilots genuinely thought the Liberty was an "Arab" ship. So that makes it OK to fire on the life rafts as the crew desperately tried to escape? Wow.

  21. the pilots reported seeing the american flag, and the ship's identity as AMERICAN, and were ORDERED TO SHOOT / TORPEDO / BOMB / STRAFE / DESTROY / SINK the ship.

if this can be pawned off as a 'mistake' then the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were 'accidents' too.

  22. Thanks to all who rallied 6/8/09 to protest the murderous attack on the USS Liberty by Israel, and our government's refusal to rescue the crew, later threats on them, and failure to punish Israel.

  23. On our 2009 Congress complicity with Israel's corript rogue militaristic behavior, please read the latest interview of James Petras, found at http://www.atheonews.blogspot.com. Thanks to Scott Horton and Ray McGovern.

  24. Hi ghost-Oswald here…so you know – JFK told Ben Gurion he wasn't getting any nuclear technology from the U.S. so I decided to shoot his head off from the front of the car he was riding in – then I scurried up to one of the upper floors of a building about a block away and then ran down and out and met some cops. Soon thereafter, I was in fact shot myself by a fanatically pro-israel mobster while I was being protected by highly trained well rehearsed law enfocement personnel. After a few years passed- JFK's brother , who was a loyal patriotic American as well – began to get closer to finding out who actually killed his brother – THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA…. suddenly a 'crazy Palestinan' who was hypnotized and had no recollection of what transpired used a magic gun capable of firing multiple rounds but only flashing one or two. Although the "CRAZY PALESTINIAN TERRORIST" was many feet away , the high tech magic weapon was able to leave close range powder burns on the brother

  25. I believe Liberty survivers have an internet radio show every week. Search for it.

  26. [...] Scott Horton interviewed Ray McGovern who suggests that Israel had at least two reasons for attacking the ship. Firstly, he suggests that they organizing to take the Golan Heights. Secondly, he suggests that the ship might have learned that Israelis were shooting Egyptian prisoners. [...]

  27. "Antiwar" needs to put up or shut up. Speak facts. Tell the MF'ing Truth – otherwise there is NO difference between you and FOX and CNN and the rest of the cockroaches and dissemblers of pro-Israhell bullshit.

Obviously most of the people who read this site are NOT complete morons. They don't buy "9/11". Nor do they buy the arguments of the (Z)ionist-controlled media – apparently it now extends very deeply into the "antiwar movement".

The Silence exhibited by the editorial staff of this site is….i dunno…telling?

  28. There is no such thing as friendly fire!!!

    Pat Tillman

  29. You got it right. I'm even surprised that Horton would have McGovern on his show due to McGovern coming out supporting a new 911 investigation. Raimundo is a tool and Horton is his obsequious little suck-butt.
