Daniel Luban, writer for IPS news via Jim Lobe’s blog, discusses John Bolton’s cagey endorsement of a nuclear strike on Iran, how staking out an extreme position can redefine what constitutes “moderate,” the provocative nature of Iran sanctions and the neoconservatives’ disdain for the casualties of war.

  1. this is how the war against germany got started in the 1940s – the US navy did everything in it's power to provoke the German Navy into firing on a US ship so that Roosevelt could have a pretext for war. But Germans wouldn't engage. War was inevitable not because Germany was provoking the U.S., but because the U.S. was determined to get involved with the war. Is the same policy being played out today with regards to Iran? A thought provoking notion, but I hope not!

  2. Ah, but Germany later declared war on its own accord and was at that time already engaged in large-scale warfare against "allies" and "new allies", so that comparison is faulty at best. Iran would be quite happy to work with US on some of its border problems, I'm sure.

  3. Nothing new. Bolton's solution to any problem is Bomb, bomb, bomb. Doesn't matter who. Anyone he doesn't like, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles or of course, San Francisco. He'd just as soon drop a nuclear bomb on the White House hoping Obama was home.

  4. For a guy who has never spent a day of his life in combat, Bolton sure does have a real thirst for blood. Maybe somebody should just nuke him instead.

  5. Bolton maybe right bombing Iran like Israel did to syria and Iraq , maybe saving more lives than not bombing them . I dont know but that would be my guess

  6. The important point missed here is that John Bolton’s remarks were aimed not so much at the American public but at the Iranian government.

During the past 6 years the THREAT of invading or attacking Iran has been on the agenda of US and Israeli governments. Declarations in this regard have become ever louder and more hysterical. And all the while the likelihood of the THREAT ever materializing has been receding.

Iranians are by now gotten used to it and pay little attention to the increasingly dire pronouncements coming from Israelis and their American allies. John Bolton, like Netanyahu, feels powerless when faced with the inevitability of Iran mastering the full cycle of nuclear technology.

Bringing up the notion and THREAT of attacking the country by unconventional weapons, means that John Bolton is desperate and has exhausted all other means of getting serious attention from Iran.

It seems that the Iranian government is preparing even for that eventuality. The eventuality of having their nuclear installations bombed by tactical nuclear weapons. Building Qom nuclear plant is probably a blatant indication and reminder of their resolve and preparedness.

  7. A group of 9 scientists, one of them Niels Harrit from the Uni of Copenhagen, have concluded that it wasn´t the planes but nano-thermite that made the three towers fall. They have examined some of the dust from WTC. They calculate that 10-100 tons of nano-thermite were placed in the buildings. Who was in charge of security ? Niels Harrit was interviewed on Danish TV 2. Science is science and nano-thermite has been found in the dust.

  8. Nuking them makes a lot more sense than bombing Iran with conventional weapons if your objective is to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear weapons power, and to stop them permanently. If you are going to preemptively attack a country, make sure you do it right the first time, and finish the job. I agree with Bolton. Nuke them.

  9. Don't be absurd. You sound like a tinfoil-hat. NIST did a very careful study of the towers' collapse. The planes ignited massive amounts of paper and office furniture, and the heat from all that combustible mass weakened the steel and gravity did the rest.

  12. andrew,

don`t cry when your turn comes.

  13. John Bolton is a Zionist, Israel-first chickenhawk. He ought to be nuked.

Iran’s a peaceful nation. Israel is a war criminal nation, propped up by American
    largesse.

  14. Science is science and nano-thermite was used to bring the towers down. You need a microscope to find it in the dust. 9 scientists, one of them Niels Harrit from Uni of Copenhagen, have examined the dust for almost two years and calculated that 10-100 tons of nano-thermite was used. On TV Niels Harrit was asked, "How to bring that much in and placing it on each landing without anybody noticing?" He replied, "You have to ask head of security that question". But now it´s an established scientific fact: The planes didn´t bring the three towers down, it was nano-thermite. At any rate, Israel got rid of its nearest and worst enemy.

  15. I think you are being absurd. Just type in Building 7 on the net; then try your explanation. There was not enough heat in the jet fuel and burning office furniture to melt the steel. It is in the science, not opinion that the truth of 9/11 will be heard. You need to do your homework before you call people absurd because comments like that impede progress. NIST, you must be joking. They did almost everything to cover up the investigation. Ask yourself why if the towers fell as you wrote, was there no architectural study of the steel? We, the U.S. sent the steel overseas to be smelted. Why? Three buildings in the history of steel buildings fall all on the same day, and no-one seems to care enough to study this phenomenon. You sound like you work for the government.

  16. Can't wait till your logic comes back to haunt you in the states. Or in Israel. I hate cheap swearing for effect, but you're a fucking idiot.

  17. How do you "permanently" stop Iran (or any other country) from becoming a nuclear power? Kill everyone in the country with an I.Q. over 130? Do an annual cull of the country's high I.Q. people? Create an idiocracy? How come its "okay" for the USA to have nuclear weapons but not other countries? How come it is "okay" for Israel to have them but not Iran? What has Iran ever done to the USA anyways? Are there Iranian armies in Canada and Mexico like there are in Iraq and Afghanistan, the two countries that border her? Are there Iranian naval vessels in the gulf of Mexico like there are American ships in the Persian gulf? Did an Iranian ship in the gulf Of Mexico blow up an airplane of American children heading to Florida to go to Disneyland like America blew up the Iranian airbus? Did Iran overthrow Eisenhower's administration in 1953 like America overthrew Iran's democratic government in 1953? America is also the only country in the world to actually USE nuclear weapons. Not once but twice. And against an already defeated foe.

  20. Bolton shows up on Foxy News all the time spouting his warmongering.

He has his lips firmly locked on the manhood of Israel.

It is not the loss of U.S. military personnel that bothers me(afterall, most are tools of the state), it is the disregard for human life in general that f**kers like Bolton ooze.

Bolton probably sits in an office with kiddy porn pounding his pudd asking for Mommy and then puts on a front as some great intellectual military strategist.

  21. Calling this dangerous cartoon looking character a fascist leaning psychopath is an affront to people suffering from this illness.

  22. Speaking of Bolton and the Germans, I'd pay good money to see Bolton stand in a field while a squadron of Stukas bombed him into oblivion.

  23. Well, by that logic the Japanese sure did the U.S. a BIG favor by hitting Pearl Harbor they way they did.

  24. Now that explains why steel furnaces are fueled with paper and wood . . .

  25. I've always been of the opinion that the WTC buildings were prepped for demolition after the failed 1993 attack. From a damage control standpoint, it makes sense, because the 1993 attackers revealed in their interrogations that the objective was to get the buildings to fall over and start a domino chain reaction of other buildings. With the nanothermite in place, unscrupulous people (the WTC had a lot of FedGov agencies as tenants) could use it to create their long sought "new Pearl Harbor" to "galvanize American willpower" against the Muslim "enemy."

  27. When you heat steel it weakens. When that steel support 20-30 stories of structure above it there is s good chance of collapse. If a 100 tons of structures starts to move, it wants to keep going. What is absurd to me is how these contrived theories, give such credit to their plotters. The fact that some airplanes were flown into some major landmarks at maximum velocity in broad daylight doesn't lead one to believe some sneaky people planted explosives to make another building in the vicinty collapse. This was not an episode of 24. Plotter : "Let hit the white house and the starbucks across the street because a staffer of the Sec. Defense might be there…."

If the conspiracy mongers ever had to explain Hiroshima, they would have to pick anti matter, asteroid or black hole to be happy.

  28. That is not good science. Don't assume the label of science gets you a free pass. Scientist and engineers can incorrectly interpret data or draw wrong or exaggerated claims from them. I assume they also found totally lacking in the structural explanation of the failure? Lets see 100 tons= 200,000lbs=1000 deposits of 200 lbs or 10,000 deposits of 20lbs. Gee that shadowy non-thermite planner has one busy summer, or had a real clever plan.
Two planes were flown into the buildings at full speed. Seems a little STUPID to think we would only be impressed if they collapsed!! So the building had to collapse by covert explosives just to make sure we were paying attention ??
I look at this 100% as an event of history (not the political aspect),and I see intelligent people wasting there time searching for what? A more palatable truth? A truth they agree with ? Maybe you conspiriatorialistas are just being ironic and I just don't frikkin get it. We landed on the moon, it was kinduv of waste of time but hey we did it.

  29. Did he really say these things at the University of Chicago? Shame on the University of Chicago.

  30. It's an affront to my human rights that I have to listen to this man and am not allowed to slap him till I break my hand.

  31. It's an affront to my human rights that I have to listen to this man (Bolton) and am not allowed to slap him till I break my hand.

  32. First the buildings were built to withstand a hit at maximum velocity from a 707. The maximum speed of the 707 is faster than the 757 and force of impact increases exponentially with speed. Plus the planes didn't even have full tanks of fuel when they hit. I realize it's possible that the structure was weakened enough to collapse and I'm not dismissing that either. But how do you explain the Windsor tower in Madrid that burned for over 24 hours with the steel structure still intact and standing when it burned out? Go look at the videos. Virtually everything is gone except steel frame. No steel frame buildings in history ever collapsed because of fire before or since 911. How do you explain the fact that WTC 5 and 6 were much closer to 1 and 2, and received massive damage from debris and yet their steel structure was still standing as well after the fact. And yet building 7, which no photographs of reveal any debris damage to (and most of the building is visible in those images), collapsed from damage to a few columns as per the NIST report. On top of that there were other buildings that were closer to WTC 1 and 2 that were damaged and none of them collapsed. Only WTC 7, the one that had a the NYC counter-terrorism office, a Secret Service office, a CIA office, an office of Housing and Development, an office of the SEC which had hundreds of files related to the Enron scandal in it. And there are multiple, multiple the eye witness accounts from the rescue workers and clean up crew of many secondary explosions even in WTC 7 and of huge amounts of molten metal in the wreckage. Where did that come from? The fire was never hot enough to liquify steel even if it could weaken it. Go on youtube and type in WTC molten metal. You can find a video of a NYC fireman saying "There was all this molten metal. Molten metal running down these rails. It was like being in a foundry." And then there are the people arrested in a white van near the George Washington Bridge that had traces of explosives and some of whom turned out to be former explosives experts for a foreign nations armed forces. This was after the police received a warning that the Bridge was going to be attacked.

I realize there is a chance that this really was all coincidence and the towers really did collapse the way NIST said. But there are a lot of unanswered questions here. Don't dismiss it out of hand until you go and do a lot of research on the eye witness accounts of secondary explosions etc. etc. etc.

  33. Bolton's game plan is clear. It is the same as Moynihan's was: kiss vile Israel's butt every chance possible, play to the New York Jewish media and money; and then run for Senator. Keep your eye on this POS. That's his game.

  34. No, but the explosives found in the dust does make me think sneaky people planted explosives. Are you an architect? Or physicist? Or even in a field of science?

  35. There's just something so creepy about Bolton. Even for a neoconservative. From his goofy appearance, to his never-ending calls for war, bombing, violence, etc; – creepy guy. A political sociopath.
