Muhammad Sahimi, Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Southern California, discusses the consistently wrong warnings from Western and Israeli sources about an imminent Iranian nuclear weapon, the lack of outcry over the Shah’s nuclear ambitions in the 1970s, clarification of Iran’s obligations under the NPT and additional protocol/subsidiary agreements and how persistent lies about Iran’s nuclear program overwhelm the efforts to debunk them.

MP3 here. (29:20)

Dr. Muhammad Sahimi is a political columnist for Tehran Bureau. He is a professor of chemical engineering and materials science, and the NIOC Chair in petroleum engineering at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. In addition to his scientific research, which has resulted in four books and nearly 300 published papers, he has been writing about Iran’s nuclear program and its internal developments for many years.

His articles have appeared in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, the International Herald Tribune, the Wall Street Journal, Harvard International Review, the Progressive, Antiwar.com and Huffington Post. Muhammad has been a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists since 1986, and a contributor to its Partners for Earth program.

  1. One of the things I find particularly disturbing about the Iran war propaganda is that the lying seems to be far more shameless and determined than the Iraq war lies. It seems as though with each new war, the threshold for war gets lowered

  2. Even discussing the issue of an Iranian (non)-nuclear program feeds the pro-Iran War faction.
    It goes like this:

    "Iran isn't developing nukes."
    "Iran isn't developing nukes."
    "Iran isn't developing nukes."
    "Iran isn't developing nukes."

…until people are so shell-shocked, all they have ringing in their heads is:

    "Iran…nukes."

This is a clever psychological ploy and it's nothing new.

  3. [...] sanctions against Iran – another Iran war monger.  I highly recommend Scott Horton’s interview with Muhammad Sahimi. Dr. Sahimi is a professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at [...]

  4. The neocon chickenhawks and Israel-firsters will continue their lies about Iran’s
    “nuclear program.” Disregard their bullshit.

    Best regards to Professor Sahimi.

  5. Scott — I was blown away by your discussion with Mr. Sahimi, on the lies of Murdoch’s London Times, vis-à-vis enriching uranium. He said:

SAHIMI: The lies are so outrageous, are so outlandish that — they force the IAEA to go out and — and issue a statement. But of course, the point of putting out all these lies is to influence some people — they probably think if a small group of people is influenced by what they hear, they may not hear the denial by the IAEA, they may only hear about what we say, and — and that gets to — to the goal that they have.

“THE GOAL” = the percentage of Enrichment!

Check this out — they are enriching misinformed opinion, by the ratio of those that hear the lie, divided by those that hear the refutation, which is much larger than 1. And every new lie is like another trip to the centrifuge, in which the milder, more balanced opinions are thinned out and the desired, UNSTABLE ISO- DOPES that listen to Hannity become more and more concentrated.

So its a process that produces dittoheads of high enough “quality”, ie., concentration, to make up for a small loss of quantity.

    Pretty cool, huh?

  6. Leave Iran the fuck alone! Fix the U.S. NOW!!!

  7. Yousef al-Khattab f.k.a Joseph Cohen is a convert to Islam from some time back. He is either a Muslim fanatic or faking it convincingly.

  8. Where is our most vocal and formidable debunker of the government's propaganda regarding Iran–Gordon Prather? He seems to have disappeared from the face of the earth. Hasn't anyone besides me noticed this?

  9. MikeB,

Gordon Prather didn't disappear. He's not well and hasn't been for some time.

  10. Iran is no threat to America and we should not listen to the lies of Israel and Zionist Jews and Zionist Christians that support them aimed at agitating America into entering into another illegal and highly unnecessary and costly war with Iran in the Middle East which can even spark WWIII.

  11. You bastards are you in the business of censoring people because you are afraid to allow people to speak their mind because you are supporters of Israel?

  12. Where is my other comment you scum?

  13. Where is the comment I posted about Israeli lies you scum? Is this anti-war site another front for Israel while pretending to be anti-war just like all types of other deception of the Jews? How many Jews are here?

  14. So ther is selective censorship. You deceitful bastards stop begging for money. You deserve none.

  15. Where is the comment I made about Israeli lies about Iran nukes and that a war against Iran is unnecessary and costly?

  16. Stop complaining. 4chan is over there—>

  17. This whole story is hilarious. if it weren't serious.

Ask the good professor why Iran has a heavy water plant. Then ask him why Iran is pushing towards making 20% enriched U235. (hint: 20% U235 plates go into a heavy water reactor to make plutonium. if there's any good news at all, we'd be able to detect the chemical purification step of any Pu by the wafting of measurable radioactive Krypton gas). At least we'd know they were almost there. i seem to recall seeing an article where the Iranians were testing implosion patterns on lead. So the good professor's talk that high speed x ray cameras are a necessary condition may already be moot.

ask him about the arrangement of the cascade in that 'newly admitted' centrifuge hall. (hint: its to take 5% to some higher enrichment. 20%? that's all they'd need. 90+% is possible too, but unnecessary)

then ask him why anyone would make an implosion type U bomb (hint: you wouldn't. gun type U bombs are so trivial, Oppenheimer et al built and the USAAF dropped the bomb on Hiroshima without a test). Ask him why an implosion style Pu bomb is really the desired end product because that is deliverable on those goofy NK NoDong IRBMs. (hint: because the Pu bombs could weigh as little as several hundred pounds)

FWIW, you could theoretically assemble a U bomb in an elevator shaft by dropping a suitably sized piece of highly enriched U down a pipe onto another piece. delivery systems? scarily irrelevant. maybe less than the 15-20kt of a finely engineered hiroshima scale airburst, but maybe 10-12 kt? the destructive difference is without distinction.

and no. i'm no nuclear engineer. you see through Iran's smokescreen by using, of all things, wikipedia.

    Hey Scott! You've been gamed.

  18. sorry for the stammer… somehow, it triple pumped that first part…

  19. What is the point of developing missiles? Or is that also a lie?

  20. Doe, can you provide a link with evidence that Iran is producing missiles? And may I ask, if they are, what is the problem with that? Aren't sovereign nations allowed to defend themselves? Virtially all of Iran's neighbors have nuclear weapons capability. Isreal, Pakistan, Russia, India, Turkey, etc…

I'm not sure I'd be to comfortable as an Iranian citizen being the only guy in the room without a gun. Must we assume they'll immediately nuke the U.S. if they are able to arm a deliverable warhead?

  21. Simple question. Why should Iran not have nukes. Who are America or Israel to them them they cannot have any nukes.

  22. I have never read anything to indicate to me that Iran is developing nukes but I hope they are. This will bring peace to the Middle East and a lot more. Where do people get the notion that trying to kill as many people as possible as Israel does is peaceful? A psychotic bully has to be confronted.

  23. Because of Iran's threat to eliminate Israel, makes Iran an existential threat to Israel. Iran has become a clear danger. when Iran becomes a clear AND present danger, Israel will nuke them.

Iran is playing a masterfully dumb game of chicken. If Iran leaves the NPT regime, which they could do, Israel will nuke them. If Iran continues on this path, Israel will nuke them. if the Iranians stop enrichment, nobody would care what they did. Israel has tolerated their support for Hamas and Hezbollah. It takes crazy people to think that a nuclear armed Iran could act as a bulwark against Israel.

but let's do a thought experiment. Israel isn't just armed with atomic weapons. they, supposedly have hydrogen bombs. as cduggy notes, maybe everyone should have atomic weapons. let's pit an atomic weaponized Iran (a handful of 10-20kt weapons) versus Israel (400-1000kt weapons).

with apologies to Sean Connery said in 'The Untouchables'. 'just like an iranian to bring atomic weapons to a hydrogen bomb fight.'

lots and lots of people are going to die. i'm not sure the iranian people are having any favors done by their so-called leadership.

  24. Interesting.. I am intrigued how the interview will be.
