Coleen Rowley

Coleen Rowley, retired FBI agent and 9/11 whistleblower, discusses the cycle of intelligence sharing, from pre-9/11 inter-agency competitive secrecy, to post-9/11 information overload, and back to clamming up again (post-WikiLeaks); why, despite the greatly expanded national security state, the only successes in thwarting actual terrorism have come from vigilant bystanders; Sibel Edmonds’ incredible account of another FBI linguist’s meetings with a former SAVAK chief, where he steadfastly warned of an imminent attack by bin-Laden led Kamikaze pilots in major US cities in 2001; and the 9/11 Commission’s failure to mention any of this, or the three Qatari men conducting surveillance for the 9/11 hijackings – who, as revealed by WikiLeaks, are still being pursued by the FBI.

Coleen Rowley grew up in a small town in northeast Iowa. She obtained a B.A. degree in French from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa and then attended the College of Law at the University of Iowa. She graduated with honors in 1980 and passed the Iowa Bar Exam that summer.

In January of 1981, Ms. Rowley was appointed as a Special Agent with the FBI and initially served in the Omaha, Nebraska and Jackson, Mississippi Divisions. In 1984, she was assigned to the New York Office and for over six years worked on Italian-organized crime and Sicilian heroin drug investigations. During this time, Ms. Rowley also served three separate temporary duty assignments in the Paris, France Embassy and Montreal Consulate.

In 1990, Ms. Rowley was transferred to Minneapolis where she assumed the duties of Chief Division Counsel, which entailed oversight of the Freedom of Information, Forfeiture, Victim-Witness and Community Outreach Programs as well as providing regular legal and ethics training to FBI Agents of the Division and additional outside police training.

In May of 2002, Ms. Rowley brought several of the pre 9/11 lapses to light and testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee on some of the endemic problems facing the FBI and the intelligence community. Ms. Rowley’s memo to FBI Director Robert Mueller in connection with the Joint Intelligence Committee’s Inquiry led to a two-year-long Department of Justice Inspector General investigation. She was one of three whistleblowers chosen as Person of the Year by TIME magazine.

In April 2003, following an unsuccessful and highly criticized attempt to warn the Director and other administration officials about the dangers of launching the invasion of Iraq, Ms. Rowley stepped down from her (GS-14) legal position to resume her position as a (GS-13) FBI Special Agent. She retired from the FBI at the end of 2004 and now speaks publicly to various groups, ranging from school children to business/professional/civic groups, on two different topics: ethical decision-making and “balancing civil liberties with the need for effective investigation.”

Ms. Rowley authored a chapter in a book published in 2004 by the Milton Eisenhower Foundation entitled, Patriotism, Democracy and Common Sense: Restoring America’s Promise at Home and Abroad. She is also now an avid blogger on the Huffington Post.

  1. Facts are facts. Science is science. 9 scientists, one of them Niels Harrit from Uni of Coprnhagen, have found nano-thermite in the buildings. Weren´t they closed for a week for some reason prior to the attack ? According to Niels Harrit up to 100 tons of nano-thermite was placed in the three towers. The 9 scientists made a research paper on their findings. That we do know thanks to the 9 scientists: Nano-thermite was used. By whom ? Hardly by OBL.

    1. I totally believe 9/11 was an inside job. Still, it's hard to explain how a professional like Rowley, who has made a career out of investigating this, thinks completely differently. We could be wrong.

    2. YES, THIS AGAIN! Why is it that people just refuse to take the demolition evidence seriously? Cannot both the work of Peter Lance, and the work of Niels Harrit along with A&E for 911 truth co-exist? Sooner or later people are going to have to realize that they can.

  2. Obama&congressgangz declare too big to fail theft intefadh for aWB 6+6+6majorcorpz and no american dare to stop them…Muslims declare holy war on this fasad and the whole youth world join Bu$harmy for killing jobz..shame!!!……..Umar Empire is coming.

    1. You got my vote!

Can't be anything worse than the gibberish spouted by the pentecostal Palin-ites and corporate Obama-bots.

      Umar Empire in 2012!

  3. Sibel Edmonds, Susan Lindauer, Coleen Rowley, Bradley Manning – is there not a single white heterosexual American male willing to stand up to their murderous government employer?

What a disgustingly obedient generation of American males!

  4. The Director of National Intelligence (Michael McConnell) agrees with Coleen Rowley that it was an intelligence failure. (that should tell you something is wrong right away!) Aside from a play for more CIA funding, this approach distracts from the entire air defense argument, the entire “why was the FBI investigation stopped” argument and also misses the scientific evidence of an inside job, ala nano-thermite.

for a more thorough survey of this.

  5. Coleen Rowley (and Scott Horton) seem to be inching toward the view that the US governemt "let it happen" because it served the foreign policy goals of people like Cheney and his cabal. The problem with this position is that the US government didn't just stand back. they actively participated. That is the only reasonable inference to draw from the evidence, including but not limited to the stand down of the US Air Force from doing what it had done as a matter of routine 67 times in the preceding 9 months; the "Doomsday" plane filmed by CNN among others circling over Washington at the time the plane (supposedly Flight 77) carried out iis amazing manouevres; the suppression of Norman Mineta's evidence to the 9/11 Commission; the cock and bull story about cell phone calls that the FBI itself blew out of the water at the Moussaui trial; and of course the nano-thermite found in the debris of WTC 1, 2 and 7, reported in the Open Chemistry and Physics Journal April 2009.

  6. Of course there are what Scott calls the "kooks" out there promoting idiotic theories. There always are, and as often as not they turn out to be part of a cointel disinformation program. Forget the madmen and concentrate on the science. Those alleged Muslim hijackers might have been clever but they can't defeat the laws of physics.

  7. When will Scheuer explain what Alec Station was doing in relation to al-Hazmi and al-Mihdhar? Or his successor Richard Blee who replaced Scheuer in mid '99?

I recall that when Scheuer was asked to explain it on Antiwar radio a couple of years ago he blamed poor FBI computer systems. He failed to mention that the information was finally shared in late August. He also failed to mention that Alec Station deputy chief Tom Wilshire was at the FBI at the time.

  8. There remains ample evidence to suggest a "false flag" operation. Evidence from structural engineers, forensic scientists, demolition experts and numerous whistle blowers from inside the government intelligence coimmunity that have posed many, many questions that remain unanswered. So-called "false-flag" operations commisioned as provocations that have led to so many wars are a part of our history. But in the final analysis, the shadowy operatives and the architects are more often than not immunized from prosecution or even discovery, and only in most cases not until years after their passing are their crimes recognized.

  9. And the group of Israeli "art students" filming and celebrating the event as it happened on a hill outside N.Y. ? They knew Israel would get rid of Iraq as a threat.
