Ray McGovern

Ray McGovern, member of Veterans For Peace and former senior analyst at the CIA, discusses his article “Israel’s Window to Bomb Iran;” how the 2007 National Intelligence Estimate thwarted the Bush administration’s push for war; Israel’s increasing isolation as its allies depart en masse; Obama’s acute vulnerability to the “Likud lobby’s” influence during his reelection bid; the former Mossad chiefs who worry about Netanyahu’s warmongering; and whether military leadership will speak up to Israel to avoid war with Iran – like admirals Mullen and Fallon did in 2007.

Ray McGovern was a CIA analyst for 27 years, from the John F. Kennedy administration to that of George H. W. Bush. His articles appear on Consortium News and Antiwar.com.

  1. Any keen observer of Iran-Israel relations will note that the threats of preemptive strikes on Iran mostly coincide with what the Western powers consider to be turning points in their nuclear talks with Iran.
The threat of a likely and imminent strike is thought to strengthen the West’s hand in their dealings with Iran, and hopefully extract negotiating points in the nuclear standoff.

But the likelihood of a successful Israeli bombing campaign against Iran has been receding fast in the past decade.
2009 afforded Israel a good opportunity to destroy all of Iran’s nuclear fuel in a single strike, when this fuel was lying out in the open at Natanz for 48 hours prior to it being removed to a another facility for higher enrichment and processing.

The opportunity came and went. Israel had apparently very good reasons to look the other way and not destroy Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium which was in plain reach of their F-16s bombers.

A good expression for the hollowness of the repeated Israeli threats of bombing Iran is the Texas saying: “ALL HAT AND NO CATTLE!”.

    1. Mr. Haich, it is not Isreal's intent to destroy the nuclear plant or all of Iran's nuclear operation, but to draw America into a war with Iran. America will then do Isreal's job and eliminate and defect any threat to Isreal, but at the same sinking America deeper into the conflict.
Isreal's main objective, and to which it will use its F-16s, is to carpet bomb southern Lebanon with bunker buster bombs and then seize and occupy the land void of pesky Lebonese. Free water (Latani River) and more costline in which to claim the off shore oil and gas.
Isreal's first strike will not be by F-16's, but by cruise missiles from their sub fleet.

      1. Hold your horses Mr. Prophet!
Rest assured that nobody is going to attack Iran: Not Israel; not the US. American authorities know that and so do the Israelis.
The rationale is simple: You can’t attack a nation which has launched satellites and hope to get away with it unpunished.
The Lebanese, too, can sleep soundly at night and not worry about being bombed by the Israelis; thanks to thousands of Hezbollah missiles which can in case of an attack target all of Israel, including Tel Aviv and Dimona nuclear station.
Balance of forces and fear, Mr. Prophet, ensure peace in this unruly region.

        1. Mr. Haich, Irans missiles will not fly when the bottons to launch are pushed because of electronic surpression.
Lebanon, when suprise attached by Isreal's large American supplied fighter fleet carrying bunk buster bombs will have all missiles destroyed, along with the men who were to launch them.
Now, did I hear you say "balance of power"? What scale are you using? Surely you can not be saying that the subject countries under discussion are in balance.

          1. Mr. prophet:
I must admit that you seem to know much about what is going on in the Middle East; jamming devices and surprise attacks; which are unknown to most of us.
I wonder though; why haven’t the Americans used these advanced jamming devices to prevent Iran from testing its missiles and launching its satellites altogether.
These jamming devices would also come in very handy stopping IEDs and suicide vests from going off in places like Afghanistan. They could also be used to stop rocket launches against US bases in Iraq.
From your response, I also gather that these jamming devices were not available in 2006 otherwise Israel would have thwarted Hezbollah missiles from being launched against it.
There is also the mystery of Israel spending hundreds of millions of dollars developing the “Iron Dome”, when these apparently much cheaper jamming devices could do the job by nipping in the bud the missiles primed for attack against them.
I, as well as perhaps many others, look forward to your next post for clarification of the points raised above.

          2. Please Mr. Haich, go on the internet for your up grade on what is possible in electronics, or when they are to be used, and against what, it's all there.
Anyway, when Isreal has received and put in service their new German subs, buy oil stocks.

          3. Mr. Prophet,
Clearly you live in a world of your own where the western powers lead by the now defunct US and secretly manipulated by the now failed state Israel can do no wrong and can do anything they desire.
If I were you and those powers I will seriously look for some fig leaves.

          4. The main point here is that starting a war against Iran is a war that is going to result in the use of WMD because the Iranians will fight the USA and Israel to the last drop of blood and defeat is not going to be an option. And when the casualties start piling up especially for the Israelis who gave up in 2006 after something like 130 dead soldiers and civilians. Israel is an extremist state, and their cruelty and disregard for muslims in the Middle East is obvious proof that they will use nuclear weapons, and when they do that then Israel, which is a small country to begin with, will be blanketed with chemical and biological warheads that could be fired from 3 different countries. That is why no war is going to happen.

  2. and the west calls these people human???we can now see who is the terrorist of the world, isreal with their bro mr,USA,LET THEM TRY TO DO THE SAME TO LETS SAY RUSSIA OR CHINE,we don't see that happeningamericans are a cult of war and will terrorist anyone in their way,we can see the end coming for them,a country gets violenter before they die

    1. Links to a retarded hack's writeup which says

"So is Iran's complete lack of embarrassment at being caught, time and again, with nuclear enrichment facilities that have never been declared to the inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency."

      Instant disqualification.

Do a double take. The writer is Christopher Hitchens.

I'll pass on the attack on Juan Cole, I hear this is now antiwar.com's job.

      1. "The full quote translated directly to English:

"The Imam said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time."

        Word by word translation:

Imam (Khomeini) ghoft (said) een (this) rezhim-e (regime) ishghalgar-e (occupying) qods (Jerusalem) bayad (must) az safheh-ye ruzgar (from page of time) mahv shavad (vanish from).

Here is the full transcript of the speech in Farsi, archived on Ahmadinejad's web site"

This is how powerful the Zionist media is- it can create a false reality that stupid suckers keep repeating.

  3. Laboring man slow and careful thinker that I be, don’t see the Western powers being so stupid as to allow war-hawk Zionist Israel to have even one nuclear weapon. In regards to Israel bombing Iran, as mainstream media want us to believe Israel is about to do it, most likely it will never happen.

    1. Right on the money Ellis, all is hype to scare normal people into fearing Iran and giving Israel far more credit than what they really can do.
They were carved a new A*hole in south lebanon by about 5,000 very lightly armed fighters, now Iran will make the whole body one smoking A*hole.

  4. Western corporate rich control all NATO nations and their not so stupid as to allow war-hawk Zionist Israel to have nuclear weapons, nor to arm Israel sufficient to dare attack Iran. For Iran has the most powerful military in all of Africa and the Middle-East, surely only an all-out attack by all NATO nations is what a “first-strike” capacity is all about.
