Globetrotting journalist Pepe Escobar discusses his article “China and the US: The roadmaps;” how the ever-expanding “arc of instability” could get the US into a trade war (or hot war) with China; how South American economies are gathering steam while Goldman Sachs takes over a chaotic and bankrupt Europe; possible covert US support for Muslim Chinese Uighurs; and how the US empire is being crushed by the burden of “full spectrum dominance.”

Pepe Escobar is the author of Globalistan: How the Globalized World is Dissolving Into Liquid War and Obama Does Globalistan.

An extreme traveler, Pepe’s nose for news has taken him to all parts of the globe. He was in Afghanistan and interviewed the military leader of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, Ahmad Shah Masoud, a couple of weeks before his assassination. Two weeks before September 11, 2001, while Pepe was in the tribal areas of Pakistan, Asia Times Online published his prophetic piece, “Get Osama! Now! Or else …” Pepe was one of the first journalists to reach Kabul after the Taliban’s retreat, and more recently he has explored and reported from Iraq, Iran, Central Asia, US and China.

  3. Americas plan to use the military to become an empire among other things never worked so no they don't want anyone else to take the top spot witch has happened. As far as Americans what they would call for is China tryed to controll areas close to America would call for war a thing America has done to the detrement of others for a long time.Same goes for the Mid East how they illegaly go to war occupie steal all in Israels interest.America will accept they no longer are number 1 our we will see a war that makes WW2 look small in comparison.America instead of dealing with things like adults they treaten and attack countrys illegaly.Israel from the way the government talks lives in la la land to.In the book America and the Israely Lobby even most the citizens are with the evil of there government.I'm Canadian and no are government does exactly what are citizens would not approve of.Like Illegal wars and sactions on Iran and suppost for Israel and there criminal government. The Canadian government like Americas is not a democracy they do what they want no matter what there people say.The only person that may be able to change this is Ron Paul or it will be more of the same or worse. Is Ron Paul the only smart person in Americas government.

  4. We've been an empire since we took over the Philippines, 113 years ago. We just deny it because although we've been rapacious in taking other peoples' territory and intimidating pretty much everybody else, we don't talk about it, for the excellent reason that empire-building is downright anti-American. Oh, wait–I just remembered that America was built on lands stolen from Indian people, who suffered cruelly from a genocidal culture, and then stole people from a whole other continent to work on that stolen land as slaves in a uniquely cruel form of slavery. But I believe that there is a spirit of America that transcends our evil beginnings and conduct, that points us in the direction of the values of peace based upon justice for all, a brotherhood of all people, and a code of public conduct based on the standard of judging society's health by how it treats its poorest and most dysfunctional citizens.
