Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) discusses how American politicians have moved inexorably away from the republic and toward empire (witness the most recent Republican debate); how the Republican base – especially the youngest and oldest members – are developing a healthy skepticism of US foreign policy; and debunking the argument that the US can never “cut and run” because disaster will ensue.

Congressman Ron Paul represents Texas’s 14th district. He is the author of Liberty Defined: 50 Essential Issues That Affect Our Freedom, The Revolution: A Manifesto, A Foreign Policy of Freedom: Peace, Commerce, and Honest Friendship and End the Fed. His archived columns for Antiwar.com are here.

  1. What good is it to gain an empire if we give up the vision of what is to be an American. Young people have the most stake in the outcome of this election. Without real options we will be forced to repeat our recent history each time on a bigger and bigger central government scale. The need for security is endless in a people who do buy into the values embodied in our constitution. We still have a chance to turn back or slow the tide and return to our core values.

  2. thanks for the interview Scott

  3. I watched a Ron Paul highlight video of the recent debate where they were discussing foreign policy, and Wolf "Israel-First" Blitz was asking Ron Paul a question, and the network decided to split the screen and put – of all people – the greasy, stinking maggot Newt Gingrich into the adjoining frame.
Newt's earpiece mike must have alerted him to this fact, because this bloated slab of Israel lobby toe licking, war monger for Israel, treasonous scum immediately begins to make faces and roll his eyes and generally act like the complete arrogant jerk that he's been for his entire miserable life, as a means of trying to mock and discredit whatever views that were being expressed by Ron Paul.
This little charade was no accident, people. The networks have been trying to do a hatchet job on Ron Paul and to foist another one of these RINO/NEO-CON war mongering slabs of rat dooky onto the top of the GOP ticket. And, as bad as Rick Perry was – Gingrich is probably the absolute most despicably evil piece of outhouse bacteria to ever crawl out of the sewer system inside D.C.
Newt Gingrich thinks its ok to send hit squads into Iran to murder Iranians because of their academic credentials? I wonder what this turd's opinion would be if Iran decided that two could play that game, and they sent a hit squad over to help reununite Newt with his father in the Red Suit? Oh, but he'd call that 'terrorism', right? But not if he orders it done? What a nauseating, hypocritical piece of hyena dung.

Gingrich is like a turd with an air bubble trapped inside it. No matter how many times you hit the flush handle, we just can't get this turd to disappear back into the sewer he crawled out of.

  4. Well Doc. Paul,
I really hope you win and prove that for the first time in history a person became president and kept his/her word. Then again I hope you chose your vice prez with out most care. Those tend to do the bidding of other organizations. If I were you I would give guarantees to the people that in case you do not do is you say you will, they will have the right to do to you what they will! It does not get more libertarian than that, does it??

  5. RON PAUL — GOALS

    (1) As USA is an Empire that has since 1945 been terrorizing and plundering the world by brutal imperialism, we shall cause it to expire in a convulsion — or by a more peaceful means if that is possible.

    (2) As Empire USA is ownership controlled by the 10% most wealthy, namely High Society and Country Club-class, as they own 90% of wealth giving them 90% of power, we shall nationalize all their wealth and make them and their decedents destitute for the next one hundred years.

    (3) As the 51% most wealthy are the voting majority that always votes in a way that best impoverishes the lower half of society, we shall not allow the 30% most wealthy to vote or have any control over politics, or any input into politics. Further, only government taxes shall fund any aspect of politics, including political party expenses.

    (4) As the upper half of society all have great jobs, terrific homes, deluxe healthcare and own all the wealth in America, only they shall pay sales tax or any other kind of tax.

  6. (5) All our troops shall come home and be put to work repairing infrastructure, our military shall be reduced by 90% and all weapons of mass destruction — destroyed.

  7. correction
    *as

  8. oops I should have said people who "do not" buy into the "non" interventionist values embodied in our constitution.

  9. (6) Minimum wage shall be sufficient so that every citizen can afford to purchase healthcare.

    (7) Healthcare shall be government funded only to those below the poverty line. As 95% of illness is caused by the average American diet of 40% fat, government shall strongly promote a 10% fat diet.

    (8) Social Security shall be government funded only to those below the poverty line.

    (9) As government charity causes tax payers to hate the poor and the poor to become most ingrate, it must be kept to an absolute minimum least it totally destroy the moral fabric of society.

  10. I like Ron Paul's message on the economy and foreign policy.

The problem that i have with Ron Paul is the America of the "founding fathers" that he so often talks about and with much nostalgie never existed. It is a theoretical America based on his (libertarian) interpretation of the American constitution. And i think that America will never exist.

  11. They could have thought this through after Vietnam. But now it is too late: The "best and the brightest" have wrecked the Republic as thoroughly as ever did the Stalinist nasties wreck the Soviet Union. And for the same reason, a vain and criminal pursuit of empire.

  12. EQUALITY — IMPOSSIBLE BY SOCIALISM

The goal being a society where no one enriches himself upon the misery of another, can a socialist government achieve equal wealth for all, which would give everyone equal access to power? Not unless everyone had an equal ability to achieve.

    ABILITY TO ACHIEVE
    (1) The speed at which the brain can rationalize a problem and take corrective action. This varies greatly with age and peeks at about age 28.

    (2) Greater the wealth, greater the ability to achieve.

    (3) Greater your support group and the greater their ability to achieve, the greater will you achieve.

    (4) Be it ambition to study or ambition to produce wealth, it springs from ability to achieve. For if you have no ability, then you have no ambition.

  13. So, no matter how regimented socialism may be, self-employed people and small business people will always have wealth greater or lesser then a society average.

    ABILITY TO GIVE
And so, in a moral and just society can equality be achieved without government? Yes, if everyone believes that they deserve less, that they do not deserve equality.

    MORALITY
Giving actions that strive to equalize wealth in a way that produces a grateful response. Namely, to experience compassion, pity and benevolent — in a way that produces a grateful heart.

  14. I watched the Republican presidential candidates' debate on the TV. I saw two things in stark contrast to each other;

on one side I saw Mr Ron Paul, a logical and wise gentleman. On the other side, I saw a line of idiots. I believe the mentality of the majority of the republican voters will lead theM to vote for one of the idiots, because those voters do not deserve Mr Ron Paul.

  15. Ron Paul for President!! The one sane voice in Congress not beholden to the Congressional Military Industrial Complex and the quest for empire.

  16. Many things that appear in presidential platforms aren't under the purview of the chief executive. How much power does the president really have to change Abortion law on his own? What cannot be questioned is his power to affect foreign policy, monetary policy, and military posture. Ron would do well to let the Anti-War left know he is willing to work with them on social policies, much of which will be irrelevant as Fed Govt has no business in most of those things. He could do more to get the anti-war message out. He is the only anti-war candidate, afaik.

  17. " I wonder what this turd's opinion would be if Iran decided that two could play that game, and they sent a hit squad over to help reununite Newt with his father in the Red Suit? Oh, but he'd call that 'terrorism', right?"

No, no. You don't understand. Only the US holds the right to kill, torture, spy, and destroy, and all while shouting frreedom and USA! USA! The hypocrisy makes me want to throw up. What's worse is that there are many Americans who are so stupid and simple minded that they actually believe there is no hypocrisy here.

  18. Newt's smug retort to Paul that he would have used police state tactics to have prevented McVeigh was ironic. McVeigh's terrorism was INSPIRED by the brutal police state tactics employed by the BATF at WAco

  19. I think that the Founding Fathers have much to say that is quite relevant to today's issues and that is the point Ron Paul is trying to make. For instance, today there is much outrage at the incestuous relationship of "big government" and "big business". This too was a fundamental concern for the Founding Fathers that we know from the Federalist Papers and other historic documents. In their day this was referred to as as mercantilism, a la East India Company, etc. Today we refer to it as fascism or crony capitalism or the 1%, but once again the Founding Fathers laid out the constitution to specifically combat this type of situation from taking over America's politics and thus a return to constitutional principles would be good medicine and this is what Ron Paul advocates, not some "Utopian" America that you seem to have implied on his behalf. Cheers, GW!

  20. [...] Interview here: http://antiwar.com/radio/2011/11/24/rep-ron-paul-19/ [...]

  21. [...] on War or the economy by Ron Paul is well worth listening to on [...]

  22. If America truely lived under the principals of the founding fathers as you interpreted then America today would be no more than just 13 colonies on the east coast. Check out all the wars that America began and fought in the 18th and 19th century. Read more about American economic and monetary policies in that period. There is a huge discrepancy between what is written on paper and what is said in meetings and what actually transpired.

  23. Ah, yes, Doctor Paul. (You don't mind if I call you "Doctor," do you, Doctor? It's far more honorable than "Congressman"!)

Doctor, you're virtually the only member of the DemoPublican Party who believes in freedom . . . respect for the individual . . . a lawful, honorable foreign policy . . . you know, all that jazz. Your opponents Bachmann . . . Cain . . . Gingrich . . . Perry . . . Santorum . . . Romney are all chickenhawks, Israel-Firsters, statists, and bought-and-paid-for hacks of the vilest sort.

Personally, I think America's on the way out. Once the rot of statism and lawlessness infests a country's government–and the U.S. Government is over-the-top in this regard!–what can be done? Well, there's nullification, there's secession. . . .

But I digress. Doctor Paul, hit 'em with your best shot!

  24. Well, talking about 'what it is to be an American', is all fine and well, but you can't deny that the 'empire-lust' is nothing new. From the time when America wanted to subjugate Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Phillipines and Panama, and when the very racist posters appeared, featuring Uncle Sam as a teacher, teaching ('civlilizing') the personifications of those four (and not very flattering personification) in a calssroom, with a black child cleaning a window in teh back, not much has chaneged at teh core. It's a little more polished and less racist, but that's about it.

  25. END CLASS WARFARE — STOP FORCED CHARITY

.01% High Society (80% of wealth)
10% Country Club class (10% of wealth)
    40% Educated Middle-class (10% of wealth)
    50% Uneducated Laboring-class (impoverished slaves)

Our goal being a society where everyone is ambitious and productive to the maximum, and where there is no poverty as everyone shares with those in need, surely forced charity is going in the wrong direction.

For true morality, this is to experience the happiness inherent in compassion pity and benevolence that produces a grateful heart harming response. Whereas, a fake morality is forced tax payer charity, as it creates hatred between different classes and all those who get free things from government became most ingrate thinking not only that they deserve it, but an “unalienable right” do they have to take it.

Comes now the gut question: $20 an hour minimum wage — is it charity?

  27. It's not so much stupidity, as it is the result of mass brain washing. American media (mainstream) and Hollywood are still in the same place they were during teh Cold War. And what's worse is that by combing nationalism with vulgar trash-culture, they crate a very toxic mix that is far more potent than anything the communist propaganda masters could come up with. You could never see such levels of vulgarity (and just mind-numbing stupidity) in The Soviet Union. That is why people there could seldom be brain washed on teh same scale as in America. Hence the whole problem.
Noam Chomsky recently made a list of the methods in which they (we all know who 'they' are, but it's hard to specifically define them; I guess it's a little bitmore of an'it' than a 'they', as there is too much of a human element in 'they') create the 'right' atmosphere that can give birth to such -stupid and simple minded' individuals, as you put it. It's complex, but essentially they ensure our brains are preoccupied by sex, violence and trash, leaving little space for any of the worthwhile products of civilization. What 'they' don't see, or don't care about, is that such an atmosphere also slowly destroyes all that is good in society. Morality goes out the window, and all low and vulgar comes to the fore.
I guess its similar to the 'barbarians at the gates' scenario, only that there are no outside barbarians. Your own people are being turned into them… No wonder people are disilusioned with the West…

  28. Amen. It largely a fairy tale. HOWEVER, you underestimate the importance of myths. Suppose every American learns of all America has done, and in hard facts – no emotions, manner. WHat effect do you think that will have? Well, I'll tell you. Some will take it well, and want to move ahead, but otehrs will be ABSOLUTELY drained of all hope and disilusioned. I say this as a Serb (you bombed us a while back), not as an American.

People need to have hope, and while teh founding father retoric mustn't take on a cult-qulaity, it is perhaps important to teh American identity. People have to have SOMETHING to hold on to…

So, yes, we all know about the racism, the colonialism, the double standards, but I'm simply telling you that not everyone reacts possitively to a reality free of illusions. And would it not be cruel to take from people what provides them with some solace…

The American society is deeply divided. You have everything from ultra right wing, to ultra looney, and I'm not talking about small sections of teh community. Look at how many supported George Bushes illegal war (GRANTED, MANY didn't support it). And what happened with Lybia? There was now next to no opposition. I'd say you are getting worse, not better….

And another problem is that foreign policy seems to not change no matter who's in the White House. Republican, or Democrat, they all do the same.. WHo is it that weilds so much power behind teh scenes, that they turn Republicans and Democrats into one and the same on the field of Foreign politics..

  29. "It's not so much stupidity, as it is the result of mass brain washing. American media (mainstream) and Hollywood are still in the same place they were during teh Cold War."

The point is we all were. I was. But when I got the internet it only took a few months t ofigure it out. Most morons have had the internet for YEARS and STILL haven't figured it out yet. To me that is stupidity. You have to be as dumb as a box of rocks to still be fooled if you have the internet. If you don't then ok, I can understand.

  30. You're not wrong, but nonetheless, it more of a credit to those like that anything against the others… (Most) People simply don't operate like that. They are inclined to believe what they are told, if it appears believable, and it does to most. It's not just a matter of CHOOSING to believe the wrong thing, it's more the fact that most don't actually have any contact with the real facts. That's the problem. If just one mainstream media outlet chose to be a fraction more objective, it could start the ball rolling, and those who are not stupid and DO care would get the necessary push to re-examine the till then 'established facts and truth'. But no one does that, and the average American remains a prisoner their ignorance. It's actually shocking how little most Americans know about the rest of the World. Be it geography, foreign cultures or languages, most Americans know no more than is seen from the films. And that is incredibly out of touch with how the rest of the World operates. They have at least some basic knowledge of history, and such basic subjects. All things virtually ignored in the American curriculum, which gives rise to generation after generation of blissfully ignorant. And the ignorant have always been subject to manipulation by the slightly less ignorant.

And as for the Republican party, I don't know what they are thinking. I don't think much of either party, and the foreign policy will remain unchanged regardless of who wins, but you have to stop and marvel at the level of idiocy within a party that even contemplates placing their country into the hands of the likes of Palin and some of the others (most of the others). Perhaps the behind-the-scenes power brokers think an idiot is easy to manipulate, and hence a dream come true; but American presidency isn't exactly a ceremonial role. It's unthinkable to me that such people could be in a position of deciding whether to press the red button, start a war, or similar…

  31. And why is that Steve? We all know who controls the media.

  32. Is it true that Ron Paul is against stop signs at intersections?

  33. Is it true that you are incapable of writing an intelligent post anytime Ron Paul is mentioned?

  34. Wait, I thought you weren't going to listen anymore if Scott mentioned Ron Paul.

  35. Pon Raul, he is actually Mexican, well Texas is part of Mexico anyways!! As Israel belongs to Israelites cause they may have lived there some time.
    Yeeha btw!
Hey Pon, you either fix the problem of American adventure-ism or the world comes to you and dismantles your so called country. As it has happened numerous times before to countries overstepping their borders.
