Pepe Escobar

Globetrotting journalist Pepe Escobar discusses his article “Sinking the Petrodollar in the Persian Gulf;” the increasingly divergent US and Israeli “red lines” on Iran’s nuclear program; proposed pipelines that would route oil around the Persian Gulf, marginalizing Iran’s ability to shut the Strait of Hormuz; how sanctions on Iran have lessened the US dollar’s dominance in global oil trading transactions; and the civil strife in Syria, where the opposition is no more credible than the reigning minority Assad regime.

Pepe Escobar is the author of Globalistan: How the Globalized World is Dissolving Into Liquid War and Obama Does Globalistan.

An extreme traveler, Pepe’s nose for news has taken him to all parts of the globe. He was in Afghanistan and interviewed the military leader of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, Ahmad Shah Masoud, a couple of weeks before his assassination. Two weeks before September 11, 2001, while Pepe was in the tribal areas of Pakistan, Asia Times Online published his prophetic piece, “Get Osama! Now! Or else …” Pepe was one of the first journalists to reach Kabul after the Taliban’s retreat, and more recently he has explored and reported from Iraq, Iran, Central Asia, US and China.

      1. I wish Pepe Escobar would air a proposal on how the nuclear question between Iran and the West, which would satisfy both sides.

        Something along the following lines:

1-US and Russia create an international bank for Low Enriched Uranium (LEU).

2- Iran is allowed to produce as much LEU as it desires on the condition that it sells its stock of LEU in excess of one ton to the LEU-bank.

3- Iran is guaranteed unlimited purchase of LEU fuel-rods for its nuclear power stations and research reactors.

The above formula should satisfy both the West and Iran:

Iran will continue its pursuit of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes unhindered; and at no point in time will have enough LEU to enrich further to build a bomb.

        1. It is not about Iran nuclear programm, but US imperialist control of the region, by installing another puppet regime. and that's the goal!.

  1. 9-11 a CIA job? — By and for High Society?

Theory that only foreign terrorists were involved in 9-11, this has less to back it up then the theory that the CIA orchestrated it.

The CIA is an overly powerful and much to independent branch of a Security State, so if the CIA did 9-11 it could have easily accomplished it without anyone’s advise or consent. For a god unto itself is the CIA. For the CIA knew that everyone in government would suspect the CIA did 9-11, and in their hearts thank the CIA for it.

Without 9-11 disaster the U.S. military would have been substantially reduced in size. Its sole purpose since 1945 being to use brutal imperialism to plunder weaker nations, the military had for some time been consuming more wealth then it was able to plunder.

    1. FACT
Surely High Society knew when it first started its Military Industrial Complex, its brutal imperialism for plunder, that the vengeance generated by it would cause an overabundance of freedom fighters to become terrorist, which would motivate taxpayers to fund a larger military, which would maximize profits for High Society. And so, as High Society knew that a 9-11 type disaster was destined to happen, whether or not they directly planned it to happen, all the blood guilt is on their heads.

    2. This possibly is no longer true when you understand what was Stolen and or removed from Iraq 17 Billion just Vanished and a Hoard of GOLD as has now occured to Libya 200 Billion and GOLD
and the people who,s Lives and Homes lay in Rubble get None of it? Yey the priority as it always has been Oil beeing sucked out whils the people Who Cares?

  2. There is already a pipeline across Saudi Arabia, going from their industrial city of Jubail (on the Gulf) to their industrial city of Yanbu (on the Red Sea). I think it's decades old.

  3. Even if Iran were disarmed, they would deploy the missiles in Bulgaria, Romania and Poland anyway. Der Spiegel, 49/2011.

    1. The Polish russophobic, neo-con, foreign affairs minister Sikorski admitted a couple of years ago when jumping ship from his losing party to the winner to regain his ministerial position that of course Poland was not worried about Iran attacking (WHY WOULD IRAN ATTACK EUROPE THEN!?!?!??!), the missiles were all about Russia and that is the worry now, that the American will leave.

  4. There can be no secular solution to a criminal government,
until after there is a moral solution to an immoral society.

  5. Either we need more intelligent rulers to lead us out of darkness,
or we the less intelligent need to see that those most intelligent
will always and forever love the darkness.

  6. “Iranian lawmakers… stop oil supply to European countries”

The report quoted Nasser Soudani, a member of Iran Majlis (parliament) Energy Committee, as saying that in reaction to EU measure, Iranian lawmakers are drafting a new law, which would stop oil supply to European countries as soon as possible.

“A number of representatives of the Majlis and I are seeking to approve a bill according to which all European countries that made Iran the target of their sanctions will not be able to buy even one drop of oil from Iran, and oil taps will be turned off to them so that they will not play with fire again,” the lawmaker added.

  7. One objection : Pepe described Assad as being unwilling to reform the system in Syria but this is not true and I wish Scott had pointed that out. Assad very early-on proposed making changes in the government and made concessions to the protesters. The protesters, encouraged perhaps by statements made by Western officials (Obama, Clinton etc.), were unwilling to cooperate with Assad opting for regime-change a la Egypt or Libya.. We might have had a peaceful, constructive resolution to this mess if outside powers had been more interested in facilitating it rather than just villainizing Assad.

    1. Pepe was right about this, if we view Assad's proposed reforms in context:

"Two forms of carrot are constantly dangled tantalisingly in front of the population: those of "reform" and "resistance" (ie against Israel). Both are vacuous but were thought capable of keeping the regime in power indefinitely. For anybody who follows such announcements regularly, the official and unofficial government media are always peppered with words such as "civilised", "progressive" and "development" – terms for something that is supposedly in a constant state of progress, or transition. This is what we find today in Assad's Syria, with political reform always something that is to be studied and applied moderately, but never actually implemented. Reform is the promised land that nobody will ever reach."

Source: Fadwa al-Hatem "Syrians are tired of Assad's 'reforms'"

(NB. To be clear, this is not to argue for externally imposed sanctions or regime change.)

  8. The Problem goes more than 40 years back, first outlined by Bob Aldridge The Counterforce Syndrome, First Strike ! The Pentagon´s Strategy For Nuclear War and Nuclear Empire (ch. 9 on anti-submarine warfare). The Bloody Pentagon is pursuing a disarming first strike capability / an unanswerable first strike capability, Nuclear Supremacy and they suggest without nuclear winter.

  9. Fake morality USA

“The US involves itself… to better the planet for the future…
its not what’s right or wrong anymore, its what’s moral,
    among average human beings.”

Say what you want to about Russia and China, but for an absolute they do know the difference between right and wrong. For ask their people what they think about Empire USA creating 1.5 million war widows in Iraq and to a man they will say, “I would not want that happening to our women.”

For to enrich yourself upon the misery of another, this is wrong and this is a crime in any fair and just society. But not so in Empire USA, where the standard for pleasure is to seduce another man’s wife. For “what’s moral” in such a fake morality is for everyone in society, to enrich yourself upon the misery of anyone less wealthy, for always is their victim less educated you see.

  10. On the basis of what exactly can the UN GS claim that the recent IAEA report on Iran´s nuclear program indicates that it has a military dimension. Even the CIA admits that the report contains no new evidence.

    Lance R
“Laser tracking missiles are a horrible means of defense,
since they can easily be turned back at Iran after they
are fired through the use of Mirror Refractors.”

An unlimited number of safeguards can be designed into a laser guidance system to prevent backtracking. My how easy it is to fool people when you have just enough knowledge to make yourself dangerous.

  12. Aren, you either are naive or a troll! Clean up you own house before deciding who is allowed to do what and what not. i cant see any fool sending inspector to japan {lots of radioactive leak as americans wil soon start feeling the effects of in case you miss the news} or US or isra-hell for that matter.
In any event an attack on iran will make american and ‘their allies’ citizens fair game everywhere in the world. and thats darn shame, innocent folks should not die just cause ‘the owners’ don’t give a shyt.
    scott, keep on keepin bro!
