Monday: 4 GIs, 35 Iraqis Killed; 23 Iraqis Wounded

Britain’s next prime minister, George Brown, visited Baghdad on a day of light violence. Throughout the country, 35 Iraqis were killed or found dead and 23 were wounded during attacks. Coalition forces did not fare so well. Four Americans were killed and six were wounded during a bridge bombing south of Baghdad. Also, an incident in Anbar province may have left more Americans dead or injured.

Three Coalition Force soldiers were killed and six wounded during a suicide car bombing at a checkpoint near Mahmudiya late yesterday. An Iraqi interpreter was also wounded. The incident took place at a major bridge overpass that was partially demolished. Over the last few weeks, bridges have become a favored target of militants. Also, an IED killed an airman south of Baghdad on Saturday.

Another bridge, this one servicing a route from Baghdad to northern Diyala province, was attacked and left unusable. No information on casualties was released.

An unspecified number of Americans were killed or injured during an unconfirmed attack in al-Rihaniya.

British targets in Basra were attacked, but no casualties were reported.

In a rare moment of unity, Sunni, Shi’ite and Kurdish politicians voted to remove Mahmoud Mashhadani as speaker of Parliament. His bodyguards had assaulted another lawmaker.

In Baghdad, mortars landed in the Green Zone but produced no casualties. Mortars also landed in Zayouna and Bayaa, injuring seven people, including Iraqi soldiers. And IED in al-Wathiq square injured three people. Also, 17 dumped bodies were recovered.

A roadside bomb in Samarra killed two police officers and wounded three others.

In a drive-by shooting in Hawija, a man was killed and two others were wounded.

Gunmen killed the general director of the central bank in Mosul and his two guards. Four bodies bearing gunshot wounds were found on Sunday. Also, gunmen stormed a home where they killed four women and a man inside.

A Katyusha rocket killed two people and wounded five in Tal Afar yesterday.

Two militants were killed while trying to plant a roadside bomb in Tuz Khormato.

In Iskandariya, a bomb damaged the offices of the Iraqi Islamic Party, but no casualties were reported.

A policeman was kidnapped in Tikrit.

One soldier was killed and two more were wounded during an IED attack in Khalis.

Also, the Islamic State in Iraq claims to be holding 14 security personnel hostage in an unknown location. They will be killed if demands are not met..
