Tuesday: 4 GI, 169 Iraqis Killed; 265 Iraqis Wounded

Although fewer incidents occurred today, at least 169 Iraqis were killed and 265 more were wounded during new attacks. Most of the casualties were from a major bombing in central Baghdad. In Diyala province, U.S. forces are conducting a new security operation that has already killed several militants. Also, four American servicemembers deaths were reported today.

A Task Force-Marne soldier was killed and three were wounded south of Baghdad yesterday. An IED killed another American soldier yesterday in Baghdad. An Multi-National Division-B soldier was killed by small arms fire yesterday in Baghdad. Also, a soldier, who was injured in 2005, died after undergoing surgery to replace a missing piece of skull with a prosthesis.

In Baghdad, a car bomb at a Shi’ite mosque killed at least 78 people and wounded 224 others. The Iraqi army reported killing 15 suspects and arresting 65 others. In Doura, an Iraqi soldier was killed and three others were wounded during an IED explosion. An IED wounded three civilians in Yarmouk. Mortars injured three civilians in al Shabb. Mortars in Za’afaraniya killed two and wounded 19 others. Also in Za’afaraniya, a roadside bomb killed two people and wounded five. An Iraqi border guard was killed in the al-Shurta tunnel. Police found 21 bodies scattered in several neighborhoods. Late in the day, mortars fell in the Green Zone.

U.S. forces killed 22 militants during a new security operation involving 10,000 American troops in Baquba. Thirteen unidentified bodies were brought in to the morgue.

Three policemen were wounded in Nasariya when mortars fell on their headquarters. Two civilians were wounded in a separate mortar raid. The town in now under a curfew following two days of heavy clashing between security forces and the Mahdi Army.

In Baaj, 500 policemen resigned under threat of death from members of the Islamic State in Iraq. Many of the officers were border police.

Four militants were killed and several arrested in Samarra in connection to last week’s bombing of the Golden Mosque. Also, a civilian was shot and two others were wounded.

Mortars killed a woman and a child in Tal Afar.

In Mosul, gunmen killed a female university student.

Two tribal leaders were killed and their driver wounded during an incident in Iskandariya.

At the Sulaimaniya hospital, the cheif of Mandili police died from wounds sustained during a bombing last week.

Mortars in Basra killed three civilians and wounded a policeman.
