On an otherwise quiet
day, Ali Hassan al-Majid, a cousin of Saddam Hussein who is known as "Chemical
Ali," was sentenced to death,
along with two other people, for genocide and crimes against humanity. At least
41 Iraqis were killed and 18 were wounded during violent incidents. Also,
three more American servicemembers were killed in separate incidents yesterday,
bringing the total deaths to 12 for the day.
Northwest of the capital,
soldier was killed during combat operations. An MND-B
soldier was killed during a combined roadside bomb and small arms attack.
Also, a Task
Force Lightning soldier died in a non-combat related incident.
In Baghdad, a police
commando was killed and three others were wounded during a bombing in the
Mansour district. Two
accountants were kidnapped. A roadside bomb in al-Fdheliya resulted in no
casualties. In Sabi'a al-Bor, mortars killed
one civilian and injured four more. Mortars killed
one person and wounded two more. Gunmen assassinated
the head of the Central Children's Hospital in the Iskan neighborhood. In
Doura, gunmen shot
dead a policeman and wounded another. Also, 11
dumped bodies were found; these are usually attributed to sectarian violence
and are often covered in gunshot or torture marks.
of Rabha al-Hamzawi, an Iraqi feminist activist, was found shot to death in Balad.
In a separate incident, a local councilor was abducted.
An Iraqi general
was kidnapped in Basra. Three hostages were freed.
In Suwayra, an Iraqi
translator was killed in a drive-by shooting.
An off-duty Iraqi
soldier was killed in a drive-by shooting in Kut.
killed four suspects
and detained 14 others during operations in Hawija and Baghdad.
Combined U.S. and Iraqi forces killed
six al-Qaeda suspects and detained five others in Karmah.
Mosul, a female
journalist was killed while on her way home from work. A policewoman
was shot to death. Also, a Shiite Kurdish member
of the provincial council was gunned down.
