Wednesday: 121 Iraqis, 1 GI, 1 Briton Killed; 87 Iraqis Wounded

Curfews and other security measures remain in effect as pilgrims observe the anniversary of the death of Imam Moussa al-Kadhim; due to the curfew, Baghdad newspapers are unable to publish until after tomorrow’s observances are over. Overall, 121 Iraqis were killed or found dead and 87 more were wounded. Also, an American soldier and an RAF servicemember were killed in separate incidents.

An American soldier was killed and four more were wounded during combat operations in western Baghdad. British servicemember died in Basra as a result of a small arms attack. A unspecified number of British soldiers were injured, while at least 10 gunmen were killed.

At least 40 people were killed during a pair of incidents in Sadr City. An overnight raid by Iraqi and Coalition troops left 32 dead, most in an airstrike in the densely populated suburb of Baghdad. Today, fighting between Coalition forces and the Mahdi Army left another eight dead and 10 wounded.

In Baghdad, only 11 dumped bodies were found. A U.S. airstrike killed a Mahdi militiaman in the Amil neighborhood. Gunmen kidnapped three pilgrims in the al-Wehda neighborhood, but one victim was killed while attempting to escape. In the Doura area, gunmen killed one pedestrian and wounded two others; eight people were wounded during a pair of mortar attacks. A little girl was killed and two people were wounded during a mortar attack in Abu Dsheer. Mortars in Bayaa killed one person and wounded two. A woman and her daughter were injured when gunmen tried to assassinate a ministry official. An IED injured three Iraqi soldiers in Mansour.

In Kirkuk, a policeman was killed and six others were wounded when a roadside bomb blasted them. A body bearing gunshot and torture wounds was found. Gunmen killed one person and wounded another. Four policemen were injured and a civilian when a car bomb was detonated. Gunmen kidnapped the soccer club’s goalkeeper while he was on his way back from Baghdad. Also, U.S. and Iraqi forces arrested 20 suspects. Yesterday,

Coalition forces killed eight suspects near Tarmiyah and detained 29 others.

Three militant fighters were killed near the Syrian border in the Sinjar area; a truck carrying explosives was confiscated, and other fighters were detained.

Seven people were killed and two wounded during a mortar attack in Samarra.

A an assistant to the former mayor was wounded and his driver killed and a second guard wounded during an attack in Najaf. Also, gunmen killed a lawyer in a drive-by shooting and two policemen in a separate incident.

At a Hawija petrol station, a roadside bomb killed one person and wounded two others. A mortar attack left one infant dead and wounded four members of the baby’s family.

A drive-by shooting in Mahaweel left one person dead.

Gunmen in Jurf al-Sakhar killed a civilian.

In Dujail, gunmen killed a policeman.

No casualties were reported in an attack that left a bridge near Balad demolished.

Thirteen gunmen were arrested north of Hilla.

A suicide bomber blew himself up in a Baquba barbershop, killing 5 people and wounding ten others. A policeman was wounded. Also, gunmen stormed a home, killing four familiy members and wounding four others; the family had recently returned form Karbala.

Four Iraqi soldiers were wounded during an attack on a checkpoint near the Iranian border at Jwamir.

In Khalis, four policemen were killed and a colonel was kidnapped. Also, eight civilians were killed and seven wounded during a mortar attack.

Gunmen in Hibhib attacked and wounded a policeman.

In the Khan Bani Saad area, two civilians were wounded by mortar rounds while two more were wounded during an attack by gunmen.

Gunmen killed a policeman in Balad Ruz.

In Muqdadiya, gunmen attacked a truck carrying health directorate salaries. They made off with $85,000 as well as kidnapping an employee.

An unspecified number of casualties were left in the wake of clashes that took place in Madaen.

Three civilians were wounded during a roadside bomb attack in Diwaniyah.

In Nasariyah, two civilians were wounded in the crossfire of clashes between gunmen and security forces.
