At least 40 Iraqis
were killed and 42 more were wounded in the latest attacks. One of the wounded
is a relative of Saddam Hussein who was injured during arrest in Tikrit. Also,
four American servicemembers were killed in separate incidents.
A Marine
was killed on Jan. 19 in Anbar province during combat operations. On the
same day, an IED killed
an MND-C soldier in Arab Jabour. Another soldier
died in Mosul from an IED attack, and an IED killed
a fourth soldier in Taji.
In Baghdad, seven
dumped bodies were found. A roadside bomb targeting a U.S. patrol in Baladiyat
wounded three
others instead. No
casualties were reported during a mortar attack in al-Uwayrij, nor
in an IED attack in Nosoor. Two roadside bombs left no
casualties in Harthiyah.
Near Tikrit in Hajjaj, a suicide
bomber attacked a mourning tent, killing
18 people and wounding 22 others.
A car bomb in Qahira killed
two people and wounded nine people.
A clash erupted between Awakening
Council members and gunmen at a checkpoint near Fallujah. Four
council members and two gunmen were killed, and two
council members were wounded.
An IED wounded
two people in Kirkuk.
In Mosul, a U.S. helicopter fired
upon three policemen suspected of planting a roadside bomb. Two
policemen were killed and the third was wounded.
Two hostages were
freed
in Amara.
Police in Tikrit wounded
and arrested a relative of Saddam Hussein under suspicion of financing
militant groups.
Gunmen killed
a woman and her 13-year-old daughter in Kalar village.
Two
policemen were wounded during an IED attack in Muqdadiyah.
Gunmen
burned down several
buildings in the al-Malali area.
At least 240 people thought to
belong to the Ansar Ahmad al-Yamani religious sect were detained
in southern Iraq; Karbala police arrested
nine more. This sect might be part of a larger doomsday cult known as the Soldiers
of Heaven but some authorities deny this. Large clashes in Nassiriya and Basra
last Friday were attributed to both groups.
U.S. forces killed
two suspects and detained 18 others across central and northern Iraq.
Iraqi special forces killed
a militant group leader in Baghdad. Joint Iraqi-U.S forces detained
15 suspects in al-Muradiya. Also, U.S. military aircraft bombed
30 locations in Arab Jabour.
