On October 7th 2001 US military aircraft began bombing Kabul. Nine years later, US military operations continue in Afghanistan with no end in sight. Within the next year, the US-led war on Afghanistan will exceed the length of the 1980s Soviet occupation of that unfortunate country.
The war has already claimed the lives of over 1100 American service men and women; while more than 7500 have been wounded. Much larger numbers of Afghan and Pakistani civilians have lost their lives due to US and NATO bombing, including by pilotless drones.
A recent opinion poll shows that 58% of Americans oppose the war in Afghanistan, yet both Democratic and Republican leaders still support it.

I want to know how this panel can be serious with its members representing organizations whose full political weight and interest has been behind these wars from the get-go??
How are we to take even an ostensibly "antiwar" Republican seriously given the record of the party he registers for, supports and publicly adhered to? Can a party label not become toxic after millions of deaths in so many countries?
I will believe any of these are serious antiwar voices when they begin to disaffiliate from powerful national organizations whose very existence and essence is aggressive war and the suspension of civil liberties.
[Of course, the same goes for working in a "labor" movement that is nothing but a pathetic partisan hack attachment to the pro-war Democratic Party].
Whatever these partisan hacks say, they are objectively pro-war and pro-aggression by supporting the very political parties that have and can only get us into these evil messes!
Oh fuck off. Dennis opposes the wars: Nancy Pelosi, his opponent, has voted FOR those wars consistently. "Ostensibly" my ass. I'll believe you're serious when you disaffiliate from your sectarian insistence on supporting the party of Obama, the warmonger-in-chief, regardless of what they do when in power. Its not any better to let these Democrats or Republicans be the voice of the movement than it is to let those Communist front groups act as if what they stand for has anything to do with a real peace movement.
The first thing that would make an antiwar "consensus" real [STOP NOW is the consensus position] is by first declaring itself to be an INDEPENDENT NONPARTISAN movement.

Not all conservatives or Republicans favor the wars. Ron Paul, George Will, John Dennis, BJ Lawson all consistently speak out against it. Before the neo-cons took over, the Republicans were elected to end the war in Vietnam. I hope more Ron Paul Republicans can be the voice of the anti-war right.
