Up here one of the candidates proposed legislation to hold candidates to their promises/lies during the campaign, he was laughed at by the regime media and the "electorate".

Exactly. That's what the whole premise of "electability". Those politicians that the Great Mentioners designate as "electable" are those whose reliability to hegemony is assured. Those who stray dangerously from the straight and narrow of total servitude to the ruling order are branded "unelectable" and thus marginalized. It doesn't matter whether the strayers are to the left and right, the treatment of Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich by the establishment is almost identical, a combination of denunciation and ridicule that they know most voters shy away from completes the marginalizaion. It's more sophisticated than the Iranian "Guardian Council" system in two ways: (1) that the candidates are nominally allowed to remain on the ballot, their suppression is carried out politically and propagandistically, not legally and technically, and (2) in Iran the members of the Guardian Council are known and identifiable, whereas in the US those who get to designate which candidates are "electable" and which are "unelectable" is entirely anonymous and opaque.
