Patriot Act/NSA Surveillance, Call Your Senators Now!

The Senate is in recess, but they will be returning on Sunday for a last minute vote on the extension of the Patriot Act’s Section 215. This is the section which the Obama Administration has been using as the pretext for NSA telephone bulk surveillance of ordinary Americans. The White House says without the renewal, they will have to end the surveillance program.

That means this is a great time to call your Senator and urge them to vote against any and all resolutions which would renew Section 215 under any terms. Despite very little momentum in the Congress to pass meaningful NSA reforms, we have a golden opportunity here to kill one of the most onerous aspects of NSA surveillance of the general public.

You can find your Senator’s contact information here, and below is a list of the 10 most important Senators to focus on, along with their contact information. Others should be contacted as well, of course, to emphasize how much we, the American public, oppose the surveillance state.

  1. Great post by Jason Ditz as usual – on a very important question.
    I would add two things:
First, Yesterday a large group of civil libertarian and other organizations sent a letter to the Senate leadership calling for the Senate to block not only Section 215 of the original Patriot Act but also all three ersatz reform bills, which are the USA Freedom Act (already defeated once in the Senate), a bill put forward by Senator Burr and another put forward by Senator Feinstein.

The stunning breadth of the opposition to all the schemes for keeping the Spy State alive is conveyed by the extraordinarily diverse list of signing organizations – from the ACLU to Tea Party Nation, from American Library Association to Gun Owners of America, from CREDO to Republican Liberty Caucus, from Electronic Frontier Foundation to Human Rights Watch. And as their letter makes clear, they want neither Patriot Act nor any of the so-called “reforms” being touted to keep it alive. So the possibility of a victory has turned into the likelihood of one. But action is required NOW.

Second, Jason following the Dustin Volz of The National Interest recommends concentrating on 10 Republican Senators. But in this writer's estimation the greater likelihood is that the Democratic Senators who all voted previously for Obama’s fake reform, the USA Freedom Act, will back it or a similar measure again, as they did last week. Then they will need only a handful of Republican votes to pass such a monster.
So ALL Senators should be contacted and urged to vote in the proper way, perhaps in the end the Democrats most of all. Your Senator pays most attention to his or her own constitutents.

Let us hope that the Spy State is dealt a real defeat on Sunday. I have contacted my Senators and Senator Paul. How about you? If not, do so at once. Time is running out.
(And contribute to Antiwar.com, because it runs pieces like Jason's call to action.)

  2. Mr. Wendy-Bendy Hope&Change and his "For the 99%" brigade are palling with the Semi-Senile Control Freaks to keep things as they are, while people with principles say "enough"? Say it ain't so.
