Free trade — not corporatist, managed trade — is the best guarantor of peace and prosperity. Protectionism leads to trade wars which very often lead to hot wars. In the US presidential race the issue of tariffs and other taxes on trade have begun to enter the conversation. We should remember how dangerous this kind of isolationism is, especially to working and middle class Americans. In today’s Liberty Report, Ron Paul explains the importance of real free trade:

This is one place where I’m going to have to disagree with the good doctor. Any kind of totally unfettered trade is ultimately going to empower multi-national conglomerates at the expense of small business and the working class. It essentially sets the stage for what amounts to private sector imperialism.
There are two kinds of tyranny in this world, big government and big business. A constitution is necessary to counter the first and like it or not some form of protectionism is necessary to counter the second.
