Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Lawmakers Introduce Bipartisan Resolution to Stop US Military Support for Saudi Arabia’s Genocidal War in Yemen

Washington, DC – Invoking the War Powers Resolution, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) joined a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers today in introducing a privileged resolution to stop US military support for Saudi Arabia’s genocidal war in Yemen. US support of this war continues to fuel the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, killing thousands of civilians, with millions suffering from mass starvation, famine and cholera.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard said: “For too long, the United States has supported Saudi Arabia, turning a blind eye to the horrifying atrocities committed against millions of Yemeni civilians since the start of this genocidal war in 2015. Even after Saudi Arabia dropped a bomb on a school bus that killed 40 children last month, the Trump Administration reaffirmed its support for this illegal war – reportedly to avoid jeopardizing a $2 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia and the UAE. It is long overdue time for Congress to reassert its role and responsibility provided within the Constitution and end our illegal support for Saudi Arabia’s war now.”

Background:

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is a leading voice for peace in Congress, advocating against counterproductive, regime-change wars. She has called for ending support for Saudi Arabia, pushed for additional oversight on acquisition and cross-service agreements (Section 1271 of the FY19 NDAA), supported H. Con. Res. 81, a bipartisan resolution that sought to stop US military participation in Saudi Arabia’s war against the Houthis in Yemen, and more.

Reps. Tulsi Gabbard and Walter Jones also introduced H. Res 922, which would reclaim Congress’s constitutional right to declare war by:

  • Defining presidential wars not declared by Congress under Article I, section 8, clause 11 (Declare War Clause) as impeachable “high crimes and misdemeanors”
  • Prohibiting the President from perpetuating ongoing wars or supplying war materials, military troops, trainers, or advisers, military intelligence, financial support or their equivalent in association, cooperation, assistance, or common cause without first receiving congressional authorization

Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) is a leading voice for peace in Congress, advocating against counterproductive, regime-change wars, and standing up for Congressional authorization before military action. Most recently, she joined a bipartisan coalition of 88 Members of Congress urging President Trump to consult and receive authorization from Congress prior to ordering the use of US military force against Syria. She has also advocated for ending the regime change war in Syria and condemned US support of Saudi Arabia in the Yemen civil war.

    1. Doesn’t matter, the person who can stop it now is Trump. Tulsi spoke
out against illegal wars during the last admin as well.

      1. My comment has nothing to do with Tulsi. And I do think it’s important as to just who is behind the war. Everybody keeps calling it Saudi led, but is it really? Your own moniker tells me you’re interested in truth and I would agree with that, the truth is important especially when there’s so little of it going around. If you read the article you can see where Obama slaughtered 28 Yemen children back in 2009. I think that’s important. And yes it is important that war in Yemen needs to be stopped. But will Trump do that? Who knows what Trump will do. What he said during his campaign doesn’t seem to have much to do with his policies now that he’s in office, which are pretty much the same as the Bush/Obama policies.

There’s a lot going on here and it’s not just about weapons sales though that certainly is part of the picture. It also has to do with geopolitics regarding the strategic location of Yemen as well as Israel’s and the US hate aimed at Iran. And so all of this makes me wonder who is really leading the war in Yemen because that is very important especially if you want to see it ended.

  1. Unfortunate that this will go nowhere. But at least this lady is giving it a go.

The endlessly deep pockets of the DC political class are eager to be filled with warmonger cash.

    1. This will go somewhere. This article sucks it doesn’t even name the bill/resolution.
H.Con.Res. 138: Directing the President pursuant to section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution to remove United States Armed Forces from hostilities in the Republic of Yemen that have not been authorized by Congress.
It has “26 other co-sponsors, including Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., the minority whip, Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., the top Democrat on the House Armed Services committee, and Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., the leading Democrat on the House Foreign Relations Committee. As a “privileged” resolution under House rules, the bill can bypass a committee vote and is overwhelmingly likely to receive a vote on the floor.” They can’t kill this shit in committee. People need to hit the phones. Dems are gonna vote party line. Call Republicans. WE can do this shit
