The Ridiculous Distortions of the Iran Obsession

From The American Conservative:

Mike Pompeo gave an interview with Newsmax TV this week, and during that interview he made one of the most ridiculous statements he has uttered during his short, embarrassing tenure as Secretary of State:

The most important thing that President Trump did was recognize that the nuclear deal was dumb, that it was bad for America, that it presented real risk. And so he ripped America out of that back in May of 2018. Since then, we have taken a fundamentally different approach to stability in the Middle East. We recognize the Islamic Republic of Iran as the greatest threat to that peace – the greatest threat, frankly, to Americans all across this great country [bold mine-DL]. And so we have put enormous costs on the regime itself.

Pompeo knows as well as anyone that Iran poses no real threat to Americans in the U.S., so it is risible and dishonest for him to assert that Iran is somehow the “greatest threat” to Americans here.

Iran does not have the ability to attack the US, and it likely never will have that ability, but the more important point here is that the deranged exaggeration of the threat from Iran comes at the expense of neglecting other much more obvious and immediate threats to this country. While Pompeo has been traversing the globe to cajole other governments into normalizing relations with Israel and berating our allies for refusing to dynamite the JCPOA at the U.N., Americans continue to die from a pandemic that this administration has done very little to get under control. Our political leaders obsess over minor foreign threats that can do us no harm while neglecting the real dangers that claim American lives on a daily basis. As the pandemic continues to spread in this country and the death toll rises over 210,000, our government’s priority remains piling sanctions on a medium-sized country on the other side of the planet in the vain hope of collapsing their state. Instead of focusing on international cooperation to protect Americans from this scourge, our top officials are fixated on vilifying a country that can’t do anything to us. You could hardly ask for a foreign policy more divorced from the real, vital interests of the United States than this one.

  1. Another threat to the American people that is ignored by this administration is the rise of right-wing extremists plotting and executing violence. In fact, the admin has undoubtably exacerbated the threat by encouraging them to mobilize.

The President feels that radicalized domestic terrorists are “fine people” if they vote for him. Pompeo and Barr are complicit.

      1. “White supremacists present the gravest terror threat to the United States, according to a draft report from the Department of Homeland Security.”

93% of BLM protests were peaceful- no vandalism, looting, burning, fighting with police or counter protestors.

Brian Murphy, the former DHS head of intelligence and analysis, filed a whistleblower complaint that:
“(DHS acting Deputy Secretary Ken) Cuccinelli and (DHS acting Secretary Chad) Wolf at different times instructed Murphy to modify domestic terrorism threat assessments to downplay the threat from white supremacists and add information on the prominence of violent left-wing groups like antifa “to ensure [the assessments] matched up with the public comments by President Trump.” ”

        1. Speaking to WaPo, former FBI terrorism-case supervisor Dave Gomez says of the “white supremacist movement”:

“There’s some reluctance among agents to bring forth an investigation that targets what the president perceives as his base. It’s a no-win situation for the FBI agent or supervisor. […]

I don’t think there’s any faith by the FBI right now that the Justice Department is an independent law enforcement organization. I think the FBI is up to the challenge of investigating white nationalism and white supremacy as a domestic terrorism threat, they just have to be allowed to do it.”

        1. Don’t believe your lying eyes. How many buildings have been burned in Minnesota and Wisconsin by communist agitators over the past 8 months? More than you would care to count.

          1. “More than you would care to count” isn’t an answer to the supposed question. If the number is greater than zero, presumably you can point to at least one such building and prove the person who burned it is a “communist agitator.”

    1. So you STILL believe this lying government? And Trump did NOT say that these people were “fine people”! Jeeez Louise all the evidence to disclose corruption and crime on the Democrat’s side and instead it is a constant barrage of innuendos, lies and outright childishness directed at a sitting President. Shame on you! You would probably join a lynch mob to noose an innocent man if the lynch mob leader could fool you like the mainstream media.

      1. Yes, he did say white nationalists were very fine people. He said
that there were very fine people on both sides. The white nationalists
were one side. This is how words work,

        Perhaps the reason that
there is currently an emphasis on Trump’s crimes is the fact that he is
Commander in Chief of the US military and the head of the executive
branch. No one is denying that the Democrats are corrupt. The situation
with Biden, however, is uncouth, but perfectly legal. This is an
        indictment of the law itself.

Trump, on the other hand, has
committed actual crimes, including war crimes. We must never forget that
Obama as well armed the terrorist state of Saudi Arabia with precision
guided munitions to be used against Yemeni civialians, and logistical
support for the blockade of Yemen, creating the most acute humanitarian
crisis in the world today. So Obama does belong in prison for his war
        crimes.

Trump kicked the atrocity up to 11 by not only
negotiating arms deals of similar size as Obama’s, but by profitting off
the stay of Saudi officials in his DC hotel while those negotiations
were being held, in clear violation of the emoluments clause of the
Constitution. He belongs in prison. Anyone who disagrees is just as partisan as you claim we are being. So kindly shove it.

  2. “President Trump refuses to distance himself from white nationalists. I realized… that his rhetoric was a recruitment tool for violent extremist groups. The president bears some responsibility for the deaths of Americans at the hands of these violent extremists. […]

Just as he ignored white nationalists, he also ignored COVID-19…
(T)he government’s failure wasn’t just because of bureaucracy, the newness of the virus, or even the president sticking his head in the sand. It was intentional. This is worse than dereliction of duty — this is willfully leading defenseless people to a killer. President Trump repeatedly lied to the American public. Those lies have led to more deaths and illnesses.”

    – Elizabeth Neumann, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Counterterrorism and Threat Prevention in the Trump administration.
