    2. Try again. Our involvement in Afghanistan dates back to 1979 (at least) and the decision by Carter and his National Security Advisor, Zibnew Brezinski (spelling?) to give the Soviets their own “Vietnam.” The laughter you ought to be hearing is Gorbachev chuckling at how this all turned out.

      Having said that, if you want to take it to 2001, it was bipartisan.
