  1. All attempts to cripple foreign leaders through sanctions hurt two groups of people: American consumers, and the common citizens of the foreign countries whose leaders we attempt to cripple.

All attempts to cripple foreign leaders through sanctions benefit two groups of people: American politicians and government officials, and the politicians/leaders of the foreign countries we are attempting to cripple.

This situation could be interpreted as “backfiring,” except that the benefits to politicians are exactly the intended consequences of the sanctions. I won’t claim that the damage to the common citizens, here and abroad, are intended; in my opinion they are simply irrelevant and inconsequential to the politicians who manufacture the sanctions.

  2. Sanctions are evil. Torture is evil. Bombing a basically defenseless nation is evil. Backing evil mercenaries and governments is evil. A nearly one trillion dollar military budget is evil. Sowing death and destruction to countries that are not a security threat to us is evil.
