Glenn Greenwald interviews Scott Horton on Ukraine, Russia, and his new book Provoked

Antiwar.com editorial director Scott Horton discusses his new book Provoked: How Washington Started the New Cold War with Russia and the Catastrophe in Ukraine with the great Glenn Greenwald on System Update.

They discuss the American establishment’s enmity toward Russia, the Maidan putsch of 2014, the “low-level” war that took place between then and 2022, and the disaster since then.

Greenwald says that Scott’s book “is the definitive history of U.S. involvement in Ukraine.”

  1. Nov 21, 2024 Russia Struck Ukraine With The World's Most Powerful Hypersonic Ballistic Missile 'ORESHNIK'

On the night of November 21, Russia launched the most devastating missile attack on Ukraine. And judging by the incoming information, the Ukrainian authorities and the so-called Western leaders will be in a state of shock from this demonstration of the power by Russia for a long time. It is noteworthy that Moscow carried out this missile attack immediately after the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation officially announced the downing of two British 'Storm Shadow' cruise missiles in Russian airspace. It seems that the Biden administration's decision to allow Ukraine to use Western long-range missiles deep into Russian territory has indeed proved to be fatal not only for Kiev but also for western countries.

  2. The "Holodomor" is a fraud. It was invented in Canada in the 80s. There was no intentional "genocide."

  3. According to Jacques Baud, it wasn't Russians primarily acting as "little green men" in Crimea, but about 20,000 of the Ukrainian armed forces also stationed there who removed their insignia and joined with the Russians to provide security for the referendum. I would like to see some confirmation of this. Because if true, it completely flips the western narrative on its head. Those same Ukrainians then allegedly switched sides permanently and stayed in Crimea.

Additionally I remember finding an account from a western journalist about a caravan of Crimeans who had been in Maidan to see what was happening and counter-protest the unfolding coup. On their way back to Crimea after the coup had happened, they were harassed and attacked, but I can't find the story anymore, of course. The Internet has been cleansed of inconvenient reportage from the time.

  4. IMO Scott gets too hung up on the ethnic Russian aspect in Donbass at the expense of the real importance of Russia's near abroad. The whole point in the minds of the NATO hawks in having Ukraine in the fold must be viewed from the angle of the INF and the US tearing it up. The goal is to put intermediate range missiles along Russia's proximity "near abroad" and Ukraine is the reddest of red lines in that regard. Putin and the Russians would not have sat around for 8 years watching an actual 'genocide' against "ethnic Russians" if that was the primary driver of the conflict from the Russian perspective. The SMO was only launched when Zelenskyy started openly stating that they would seek to join NATO in a short period of time AND re-acquire nuclear warheads…to be housed on IRBMs which – again – the US had torn up the treaty regulating them.
