Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan has recently been informed that she is the target of an IRS lawsuit. She posted the following on her Facebook page:
I just got a notice from the IRS that I owe them 104 grand and they are going to levy my bank accounts and property. I don’t have any property and there’s less than 150.00 in my bank accounts. Looks like Fed Prison is in my future. I would rather go to prison than fund the crimes of this government. I am going to send them a notice that they owe me infinity dollars for killing my son.
Further details of the case are not yet available, but to think of this ending up with Sheehan in prison is sickening. Let’s just consider some news to contextualize this. Brown University’s Watson Institute for International Studies recently conducted research on the costs of the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan; their estimation was $3.7 trillion. One report from the Center for Public Integrity on Monday investigates the wasteful Pentagon practice of give-away no-bid contracts for the defense industry, which has ballooned to a $140 billion problem in 2011. Today, the findings of a bipartisan Commission on Wartime Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan were released which said that “at least one in every six dollars of U.S. spending for contracts and grants in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade, or more than $30 billion, has been wasted.”
The Brown University study found that, estimating conservatively, “in human terms, 224 000 to 258 000 people have died directly from warfare, including 125 000 civilians in Iraq. Many more have died indirectly, from the loss of clean drinking water, healthcare, and nutrition. An additional 365 000 have been wounded and 7.8 million people – equal to the combined population of Connecticut and Kentucky – have been displaced.” In Iraq, 4,792 coalition soldiers have died and 2,698 in Afghanistan. Sheehan’s son was one of those thousands.
Neither of these wars were necessary, and the lengthy occupations are even less so. After all these costs, for unnecessary and criminal foreign policies, the United States government is threatening to put a peace activist in prison for $104,000 that they have been unable to steal from her, at least in part to fund their horrible murderous crimes abroad. Even the most mainstream, knucklehead, Republican or Democrat has the ability to sense something wrong here.
This is disgraceful. Mrs. Sheehan has been put through enough by this corrupt government and their wasteful ways. I hope and pray that Americans will wake up to what is being done in their name and put a stop to this kind of political imprisonment before it's too late.

I'm glad that Cindy drew our attention (in her quote) to the direct link between the existence of the IRS and the killing machine that is destroying so many innocent people abroad and so many misguided young people who join the military, such as her son. I hope that our progressive friends begin to understand the link between taxation and war — whether war is directed at people in other countries or at one's fellow citizens domestically.
Quite honestly, I'm surprised that Our Overlords haven't already gone after Cindy, with the IRS or some other, deadlier weapon. What she's facing now awaits ALL OF US in the very near future.
I hope Cindy is getting sound legal advise. I don't believe one can be imprisoned for refusing taxes, although assets can be seized and salaries levied. As long as you don't commit fraud, I don't think you can be jailed. We don't yet have a debtor's prison, as far as I know.
IANAL, but I'm pretty sure you *can* be jailed for refusal to file tax returns, or refusal to remit tax payments. But yeah, Cindy needs good legal advice.

Cindy Sheehan is not going to prison. What she received was a civil notice. (If this were a criminal action, she would either have been arreste or at the very least been visited by an IRS CID agent.) If she has a tax liability and does not pay her taxes due, then she is going to be assessed by the IRS for this. If she does not owe the money, then any decent CPA or EA could successfully fight this case. Cindy Sheehan is no different than the rest of us when it comes to tax assessments. I feel very bad that her son was killed in war. However, everyone at some time during their lives has a horrible event that occurs. These horrible events do not excuse us from paying taxes.

I don't quite understand her strategy here. While I completely understand and support her beliefs, it seems like for someone like her to not pay taxes (if that's the case, here) is just waving a big red flag in front of the bull, making herself a huge target. What does she gain? How does it help her reach her larger goals? What happened? It seems so obvious a problem to avoid that I feel like I don't have the whole story here.
There are a large number of Americans who feel that a sojourn at public expense is long overdue in Ms. Sheehan’s case. But they think treason a better charge than tax evasion.

Maybe Cindy $heehan should actually find a day job, rather than go globetrotting with Casey’s life insurance. She has been to Cuba, Egypt, Norway, and Venezuela to name a few places, and has been across the US as well. Whether it is a t-shirt stunt at the ’06 State of the Union, a failed Congressional run, or an embrace of dictator Hugo Chavez, she goes where the cameras go. Her 15 minutes are up, the media has no use for her, and she is irrelevant. Casey is an American hero, Cindy is an American disgrace. Lock her up, and throw away the key.
