Times of Israel Pulls Op-Ed: ‘When Genocide Is Permissible’

The Times of Israel has deleted an article from their website titled “When Genocide is Permissible.”

The article contends that the nature of war has changed and that “nothing, then, can be considered disproportionate when we are fighting for our very right to live.” It continues with a variety of outrageous claims about “the enemy,” none of which are backed up with sources or links. The writer probably got his information from the highly-accurate social media.

The article concludes: “If political leaders and military experts determine that the only way to achieve its goal of sustaining quiet is through genocide is it then permissible to achieve those responsible goals?”

Update from Salon.com: The Times of Israel has released a formal statement about the article, calling it “damnable and ignorant” and stating that the newspaper has discontinued Gordon’s blog. “We will not countenance blog posts that incite to violence or criminal acts,” the statement reads.

Gordon, meanwhile, has issued an apology of his own, stating that “I never intended to call to harm any people although my words may have conveyed that message.”

“I pray and hope for a quick peaceful end to the hostilities and that all people learn to coexist with each other in creating a better world for us all,” the note ends.

  3. That's a good question though, do we all get to ask it? And does one have to convert to have a go or is it ecumenical? And who's organizing it? Is there proper coordination and training or is it mostly well-meaning laypersons having a bit of a go at it but not really going for Olympic Gold yet? I suppose it'll take some time to lift efficiency levels and really get it developing its own head of steam. There's always wrinkles like what to do with all the children's toys and cloths, do you award contracts for their disposal, or recycle and export them to help cover your costs?

  6. OK, show of hands, who is really surprised that this would end up in print in the first place? Now "pulled" and an "apology" has been issued…after a defense. With quotes from the Old Testament included in the article you'd think the penman would read the book of Judges as well.

    But it's just a little genocide. There is little violence. And "criminal" is an adjective whose meaning can be reinterpreted.

Oh, but if that article had been written by the likes of, say, Anwar Al-Awlaki it would have held up as PROOF that his adopted organization wanted to kill innocents regardless of the legality of the matter. I doubt very seriously that the US government would have accepted a deletion-and-apology song and dance and forgotten about it.

    Really, though- what's a little call to genocide between friends, right?

    Looks like a spiritless craven is suddenly a bit afraid of ending up at the wrong end of the rope, after the war crimes tribunal sits and examines his illumining perspicacious cognitive safaris to the dark side. Oh well, lets just call it a scholarly fishing-expedition that went a bit cockeyed, after a particualrly roudy wine and cheese night in the Synagogue's rear annexation complex.

  11. The smoke of this "random" article does appear to indicate a raging fire in the underbelly of the Israeli population and media. This is also increasingly noticeable in the ideology of the IDF and all those political voices openly confessing to a similar hatred. The question is: can Israel contain this fire or are they waiting until the infamous "we didn't know" after the fog of total war clears up?

      3. Try going on line and doing a bit of reading. Various European countries have shown their eagerness to take in these poor souls. Also, what the mainstream media is not reporting is that a lot of these Christian's have taken refuge in Najaf (a Shia stronghold) and they have been welcomed there.
