President Trump was angry with his Secretary of State for recertifying Iranian compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal. Even though Iran remains in compliance with the deal. What will happen when the next recertification comes due toward the end of summer? Will the US oppose its allies and the United Nations by unilaterally refusing to accept that Iran is abiding by the agreement? President Trump’s recent threats of military action against Venezuela were amplified by his CIA director, Mike Pompeo, over the weekend. Pompeo would have us believe Venezuela is a serious threat to the United States because of his claim that the Russians, Iranians, Cubans, and Hezbollah are all in Venezuela. What about the US? Last weekend’s UN Security Council Resolution imposing sanctions on North Korea for testing missiles opens the door to a US pre-emptive strike on the country. Russia and China foolishly went along with the US and voted for more sanctions thinking that it would open the door to diplomacy. It won’t. That’s the last thing Washington’s warhawks want and Russia and China should have learned as much from their complicity in Libya’s destruction with their vote in favor of UNSC 1973 in 2011.
