Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu angered Palestinians and their defenders Friday after presenting a map of “The New Middle East” without Palestine during his speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Speaking to a largely empty chamber, Netanyahu – whose far-right government is widely considered the most extreme in Israeli history – showed a series of maps, including one that did not show the West Bank, East Jerusalem, or Gaza. These Palestinian territories have been illegally occupied by Israel since 1967, with the exception of Gaza – from which Israeli forces withdrew in 2005, while maintaining an economic stranglehold over the densely populated coastal strip.

During his US visit, Ukraine President Zelensky scored a multi-million dollar bundle of cluster bombs to affix to his US supplied Abrams tanks in his war with Russia.

Over a hundred countries have signed on to the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions which prohibits manufacture, stockpiling, transfer and use of such grotesque weapons. They have a high failure rate upon detonating that end up killing unsuspecting civilians for decades afterwards. The US has not because it needs those cluster bombs to wage perpetual war round the world.

The newly formed alliance of the United States, Japan and South Korea is fueling the growing threat of widespread conflict in the Asia-Pacific region even as the three countries are trying to tout it as a step towards peace and stability. It is no coincidence that President Biden has already stated that such trilateral meetings, as well as joint military exercises, will now be held on an ongoing basis, which actually “ties” Tokyo and Seoul to Washington in military terms, since the new format of cooperation significantly expands the mutual integration of military structures and the parties’ obligations to share intelligence. Under current circumstances, there can be no doubt that the 80,000 American troops stationed in Japan and South Korea will now also remain there permanently.

At the same time, the most alarming symptom indicating the bellicose attitude of the new alliance is the systematic remilitarization of Japan. Hiding behind the potential threat from the DPRK, the state with a “pacifist” constitution has already announced its plans to double military spending over the next 5 years.

It’s 10 p.m. at Montrose Harbor in Chicago. Kiko and Tamar help me step from the dock into the wobbly rowboat. Kiko rows us out to the Golden Rule and I climb aboard in wonder. Oh my God! This is it – the 30-foot, anti-nuke sailboat with a history going back almost seven decades . . . back to the era of atmospheric nuclear testing and the Cold War at its simmering height.

The Golden Rule: “Floating for sanity in an insane world.”

Well, somebody’s got to do it! The United Nations has tried. In 2017 it passed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which was finally ratified (by 50 countries) in 2021. Technically, nuclear weapons are now “illegal” – what a joke. The possibility of nuclear war, i.e., Armageddon, is more alive than ever. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ Doomsday Clock is now set at 90 seconds to midnight.
