Israel launched a new wave of airstrikes on Lebanon today. According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, the strikes have killed at least 182 people and wounded more than 700 others. This appears to be the first stage in a major assault on Lebanon. The Israeli government is choosing a larger war, and the Biden administration has done nothing to stop them.

The latest attacks followed a toothless warning from Washington against further escalation. The NSC spokesman John Kirby said that “ we don’t believe that escalating this military conflict is in their best interest,” but this sort of appeal is useless when dealing with a government that has been eager to escalate for months. The president said that the administration was “going to do everything we can to keep a wider war from breaking out,” but we already know that they won’t do the one thing – cutting off arms transfers – that might make the Israeli government think twice about this.

Press freedom advocates accused Israel of “trying to erase the truth” after heavily armed soldiers raided Al Jazeera‘s bureau in the West Bank of Palestine early Sunday morning and ordered the outlet – which has been the world’s sole media window on the Gaza genocide – to shut down for 45 days.

Al Jazeera – which is owned by the Qatari government – said Israel Defense Forces troops stormed its bureau in Ramallah, the capital of the illegally occupied West Bank, at 3:00 am Sunday during a live broadcast. IDF troops confiscated documents and equipment and took the microphone from the hand of bureau chief Walid al-Omari as he reported on the raid.

The network – which was ordered to cease operations for 45 days – said the soldiers tore down a poster of Shireen Abu Akleh, the renowned Palestinian-American Al Jazeera correspondent who was shot dead by Israeli troops in May 2022 while covering an IDF raid on the Jenin refugee camp.

Former CIA analyst Ray McGovern coined the term MICIMATT to describe America’s sprawling national (in)security state. It’s an expanded version of President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s military-industrial-congressional complex, which Ike warned America about in 1961. (Ike originally included Congress in his warning, but in the speech he gave he left it out so as not to offend the DC elites.)

MICIMATT includes the military, industry (the weapons makers), Congress, the intelligence “community,” media, academia, and various think tanks funded by weapons makers and seeded with “thinkers” beholden to the donors. The acronym’s awkwardness is more than compensated by its acuity and scope. In fact, even MICIMATT isn’t quite sprawling enough. You’d also have to add Hollywood (all those movies and TV shows that glorify the military and war) and the sporting world to the mix. MICIMATTHS, perhaps? And I’m sure we could think of another letter or two to add, perhaps another “S” for the State Department, which has become a tiny branch of the Pentagon.

In a week that saw Israel launch a bizarre terror attack against Lebanon using weaponized pagers, it now looks as if Israel is going all out to start a war with its northern neighbor. Authorization was granted yesterday to open a northern front and there has been a large uptick in military activity. Will a major regional war break out just weeks before the US election?
